Caroline Wozniacki continues Copenhagen dominance

Caroline Wozniacki is through to the quarterfinals of the e-Boks Open, remaining undefeated at her home tournament since its founding in 2010. After a tricky opener against Urszula Radwanska, Wozniacki, so far always seeded No.1 at the e-Boks Open, comfortably defeated Pauline Parmentier 6-2 6-1, for her 12th straight win there and the number of 17 sets won in a row.

Second seed Angelique Kerber needed much more energy to advance to the final eight, but eventually defeated Anne Keothavong 4-6 6-3 6-3 for an all-German meeting against Mona Barthel.

Serbs Jelena Jankovic and Bojana Jovanovski are also through. The third-seeded Jankovic beat Yulia Putintseva 6-3 6-1, losing just one game from 3-3 in the first set. Jovanovski pulled off an upset, beating fourth seed Monica Niculescu 6-7(6) 6-4 6-1.

Wozniacki wins 11th straight match in Copenhagen

Since the Copenhagen tournament was first organized in 2010, Caroline Wozniacki has made it a priority in her schedule and her results at the event more than pleased the home fans – two titles in two years of the tournament existence. The twice-defending champion opened her 2012 campaign at the e-Boks Open with a 7-6(4) 6-2 win over Urszula Radwanska in the first round, thus improving her perfect win-loss record at the $220,000 event to 11-0. The top-seeded Wozniacki will play Pauline Parmentier of France in the second round.

Caroline's golfer boyfriend Rory McIlory flew to Copenhagen to support her, visiting Denmark for the first time. Meanwhile, Rory's ex-girlfriend Holly Sweeney is still revisiting the breakup topic. (photo: © Neal Trousdale)

Caroline Wozniacki "sings" for charity, listeners beware!

Help! Caroline Wozniacki released a pop single entitled "Oxygen". It may sound unbelievable, but this is not a prank! I mean, the track is a total mess, at least in my opinion, and I can't find even slight resemblance to Wozniacki's voice. To make things worse, word is out that the video will be filmed as well. Successful athletes spread their presence to various industries, but this "piece of art" is not the way to go.

Good thing is that proceeds will benefit Danish and Polish Paralympic teams, but even the fact that it is for charity can't force me to look at this song from a bright side.

Since I don't even understand what "Wozniacki" is "singing", I'll use Courtney's deciphered lines to give you more of the idea of what the song is about.

1. "Come over here so I can touch your body. Don’t make me wait. Don’t hesitate."
2. "O-X-Y-G-E-N, Oxygen."
3. "You’re like the gravity that’s holding’ me, it’s pulling babe."
4. "Yo, what’s your name, Girl?" "My name is Caroline."
5. "Girl, you’re my match point." "Boy, you’re my match point."

I think I need an oxygen mask now! :P

Maria Sharapova first into Miami final

Maria Sharapova reached her fourth final at the Sony Ericsson Open by beating Caroline Wozniacki 4-6 6-2 6-4 in the semis. We’ll see whether the Russian will manage to win her first title in Miami, against Marion Bartoli or Agnieszka Radwanska.

It was Sharapova who broke first in every set against Wozniacki, and in the match as a whole she earned as much as 16 break points, converting six of them. In the beginning, Sharapova dictated the encounter and broke Wozniacki twice, but in the second half of the set Sharapova’s errors mounted and she handed the set to the Dane. In the second set Sharapova raced to a 4-0 lead, and this time she held on her advantage to go to the third set against Wozniacki for the first time in their five meetings.

The third set was tight as Sharapova worked her way to 5-2. Wozniacki approached by winning the next two games, but Sharapova ultimately served out victory in a dramatic last game involving a delicate situation with the umpire’s overrule of Sharapova’s supposed double fault. (photo: © Neal Trousdale)

Caroline Wozniacki beats Serena Williams in straight sets

For the first time in her career, at the Sony Ericsson Open, Caroline Wozniacki defeated Serena Williams, and it happened now that Wozniacki is not No.1 any more. To make the quarterfinal victory greater, it came in straight sets, 6-4 6-4. Interestingly, their winners-to-errors differentials were practically the same – Wozniacki 12/13, Williams 34/36.

Wozniacki thinks that her success lies in the fact that she made Williams run and restricted her own unforced errors, while Williams believes she played just 20% of her full potential and made a lot of unforced errors. I especially love this quote of Serena: "Everyone I play always plays the match of the year".

Wozniacki’s plan for the upcoming semifinal against Maria Sharapova is also to make her move. Sharapova has a 3-2 record against Wozniacki, although it was the Dane who won their last two hardcourt meetings, in straight sets. Sharapova advanced to the Sony Ericson Open semifinals with a 6-3 6-0 win over Li Na. (photo: © Neal Trousdale)
