Belgrade, Serbia, to host a WTA tournament

The Partizan Tennis Club and Serbian Tennis Association will organize a WTA event in Belgrade, Serbia, in 2012. Prize money will be $220,000. The exact date of the tournament is still under consideration, but it will take place just before the French Open or US Open.

Participation of Serbian tennis stars Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic and Bojana Jovanovski is expected, as well as of former Serbian representative, now an Australian national, Jelena Dokic, who has reconciled with her family, primarily with her father Damir who lives in Serbia. (source: Blic)

Serena on fire, Clijsters retires in opening match at Rogers Cup

Kim Clijsters was playing her first match since ’s-Hertogenbosch in June and a right ankle injury, but her comeback lasted for only a set and a half as she retired from her opening match at the Rogers Cup against Zheng Jie with left abdominal injury. Clijsters won the first set 6-3, and retired in the second at 1-2.

Clijsters already had an ultrasound and she was diagnosed with partial tear in her left stomach muscle, which she first felt during her warmup for the match.

Serena Williams’ comeback is still fresh and she has already clinched a title at Stanford and in her first-round match against Alona Bondarenko at the Rogers Cup Serena won stunning 100% of points on first serve and 76% on the second. Also, in the 6-0 first-set win Serena lost only four points. Not to mention that the set lasted just 16 minutes! Final result: 6-0 6-3.

Ana Ivanovic also advanced to the second round, not troubled by qualifier Zhang Shuai en route to a 6-1 6-1 victory. Another Serbian, Bojana Jovanovski, got past the first round, but it was a retirement win – Jelena Dokic withdrew while trailing 2-0 with right shoulder injury. Last week’s titlist at Carlsbad Agnieszka Radwanska also won her first round, with a 6-4 6-1 win over Elena Vesnina. (photo: © Neal Trousdale)

Andrea Petkovic overcomes Bojana Jovanovski in round one of Roland Garros

The encounter between Andrea Petkovic and Bojana Jovanovski was one of the juiciest openers. Petkovic's experience prevailed and she won in straight sets 6-4 7-6(3).

The 50th-ranked Jovanovski had opportunities to win the second set, which would take the continuation of the match to tomorrow, because of darkness, but it was never to happen as Petkovic fought off all set points and capitalized on Jovanovski's inability to capitalize on her chances. Nevertheless, Jovanovski once again showed her potential and passed one more inevitable lesson from the tennis experience.

They were practically equal in the department of winners, Jovanovski hit 31 and Petkovic 30, but Petkovic made 23 unforced errors compared to Jovanovski's 41.

Caroline Wozniacki wins first encounter with Bojana Jovanovski

It was the first meeting between world No.1 Caroline Wozniacki and Bojana Jovanovski, and even though the young Serbian star provided resistance, it was the favorite Wozniacki that advanced to the third round of the Madrid Open with a 6-4 6-4 victory.

Jovanovski was the first to take lead, 3-1 in the first set, but Wozniacki answered with two breaks in that set and three in the second set. The Dane saved eight of the 11 break points she faced. After the match, Wozniacki tweeted that it was not her best game, but she was happy to get through. Here you can watch highlights from the match.

Bojana Jovanovski wins 2011 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Heart Award

Serbia’s Bojana Jovanovski played a crucial role in her country’s close 3-2 victory over Canada in the Fed Cup World Group II first round, absolutely completing the void left when Serbia’s major strengths, Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic, said they wouldn’t compete, and her efforts, crowned with amazing result, have now been further recognized with the 2011 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Heart Award.

The 19-year-old Jovanovski has been awarded in the World Group and World Group II first round category, while the Zone Group I winners are Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka, Peru’s Bianca Botto and Japan’s Ayumi Morita. Jelena Dokic beats Bojana Jovanovski for Kuala Lumpur semis

World No.91 Jelena Dokic won the promising quarterfinal with eighth seed Bojana Jovanovski to advance to the semifinals of the Malaysian Open where she will play Michaella Krajicek, who had upset third seed and defending champion Alisa Kleybanova in the second round, before taking out Anne Kremer in the quarters.

Australia's Dokic started the match and it went with serve all the way to 4-4, when the rising Serbian star Jovanovski earned a break to serve for the set. But it was not to be that simple. Dokic broke back, and even though Jovanovski repeated the feat and served for the set once again, leading 6-5, Dokic forced a tiebreak and won it 7-4. The first set alone lasted 1 hour 3 minutes.

The second set was much shorter, though, as Dokic broke the 55th-ranked Jovanovski in the fifth and seventh games to record a 7-6(4) 6-2 victory. Dokic served a total of seven aces, compared to Jovanovski's one. (photo: twenty90seven)

Bojana Jovanovski, Jelena Dokic to clash in Malaysian Open quarterfinals

Bojana Jovanovski has recorded her second thrilling victory over Urszula Radwanska in just two weeks. En route to qualifying for the last week's Qatar Ladies Open, the 55th-ranked Serb defeated the younger Radwanska sister 4-6 6-1 7-6(11), and today at the Malaysian Open, a 1-6 7-5 6-4 win over the Pole led Jovanovski into the quarterfinals.

The Malaysian Open is somewhat special tournament for Jovanovski, as her first WTA main draw appearance happened there last year. Then she lost to the now retired and eventual Kuala Lumpur runner-up Elena Dementieva in the second round. This time the 19-year-old Jovanovski has not only come to Kuala Lumpur seeded, at No.8, she improved her result by reaching the quarters and will even have a chance to give extra flavor to her Malaysian campaign if she takes out former world No.4 Jelena Dokic of Australia in her next match.

The 91st-ranked Dokic advanced to the last eight with a 3-6 7-6(6) 6-2 victory over Japan's Kurumi Nara. In the first round she upset top seed Francesca Schiavone. (photo: Johan Rivera)

Hantuchova upsets Azarenka in Qatar, Jovanovski falls to Mirza

Daniela Hantuchova is building up on her Pattaya Open title of two weeks ago, recording her second Top 10 win of the month with a 4-6 6-1 6-2 upset of world No.9 Victoria Azarenka in the first round of the Qatar Ladies Open. En route to winning the Pattaya Open, Hantuchova's first throphy in almost four years, the Slovakian defeated third-ranked Vera Zvonareva.

Hantuchova actually followed up her title run in Thailand with a first-round loss to Anna Chakvetadze in Dubai, but today against the sixth-seeded Azarenka, despite losing the marathon 68-minute first set, Hantuchova rebounded and capitalized on Azarenka’s errors to win the next two sets with ease. Also, Hantuchova hit nine aces, compared to Azarenka’s zero. Final score: 4-6 6-1 6-2.

Svetlana Kuznetsova fell to 0-3 in Dubai finals over the weekend and now she lost in the first round of the Qatar Ladies Open to seed No.8 Shahar Peer, 6-2 6-4.

As you’re expecting from me, I’ll give special attention to Serbian players’ performance. As expected, fifth seed Jelena Jankovic defeated wildcard Fatma Al Nabhani, 6-1 6-3. The 19-year-old Al Nabhani is Oman’s only ranked player. She’s world No.426. Unfortunately, Bojana Jovanovski lost to wildcard Sania Mirza, 6-2 7-5. I was really hoping Jovanovski would manage to defeat Mirza, especially because she scored some big victories to enter the draw, over the well-known players of Kateryna Bondarenko and Urszula Radwanska.

Other players victorious on Tuesday in Doha include: Flavia Pennetta, Dominika Cibulkova, Peng Shuai, Vera Dushevina and Klara Zakopalova. (photos: Johan Rivera)

Australian Open is over for Serbia’s WTA players, Jankovic and Jovanovski out

When Serbia's Ana Ivanovic exited the Australian Open as early as the first round, there was still hope for her country with two strong players left in the draw, the established Jelena Jankovic and young star Bojana Jovanovski. However, both of them were defeated in the following round of the tournament, and both the losses happened on the Hisense Arena.

Even though Jankovic was leading 5-2 in the first set against Shuai Peng, the seventh-seeded 2008 Australian Open semifinalist allowed the 54th-ranked Peng to recover and force a tiebreak, which she won 7-3. A decisive break in the sixth game of the second set allowed Peng to progress to the Australian Open third round for the second time in her career. Final score: 7-6(3) 6-3.

The match between 19-year-old Bojana Jovanovski and second seed Vera Zvonareva followed. The bright Serbian prospect may have lost the match, but not before scaring Zvonareva by winning the first set 6-2. The final score was 2-6 6-3 6-1.

Third seed Kim Clijsters is confirming her dominant status, as she followed her 6-0 6-0 victory over Dinara Safina, with a 6-1 6-3 win over Carla Suarez Navarro in the second round. The match involved eight successive games won by Clijsters.

Besides Jelena Jankovic, seeds that fell on Day 4 include: No.18 Maria Kirilenko who lost to Iveta Benesova 6-3 6-1, No.26 Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez who was defeated by Alize Cornet 7-5 6-1, and No.24 Alisa Kleybanova who fell to Simona Halep 6-4 7-6(2). (photo: uristilman)

Bojana Jovanovski – new strength of Serbian tennis

Bojana Jovanovski

Dear readers,

I would like to let you know that I participated in this year's edition of the Players to Watch series at On the Baseline and that this time I picked Serbian Bojana Jovanovski as a young player you should pay more attention to in 2011. I hope you will enjoy my article entitled "Bojana Jovanovski introduces new Serbian tennis generation to the WTA Tour". I have to give exposure to home stars. :)

Talking about fellow tennis blog On the Baseline, I would also like to remind you that you can vote for Women's Tennis Blog in the run for the best tennis blog in the 2010 Baseline Awards. Unlike in the previous years when only one vote per person was allowed, now you can vote practically as many times as you want. I have to say I prefer the old method when everyone could vote just once, but we have to adapt to the circumstances, so if you voted just once, and have time to vote again and again, well, why not! :) (photo: © Neal Trousdale)
