Anna Chakvetadze leaves adidas to join Fila

Anna Chakvetadze leaves adidas to join FilaIt seems adidas will be less and less prominent brand in tennis.

There have been rumors that Ana Ivanovic will leave adidas when her contract expires in 2009, while Anna Chakvetadze already switched to Fila signing a deal during the US Open.

The Russian world No.12 will join Svetlana Kuznetsova and Agnes Szavay as Fila’s promoter.

Annoyed by adidas' boring designs, to say the least, fellow blogger from Down the Line commented: "I'm not even sponsored by adidas and I want to leave." Hahaha.

Three seeds fell on the first day of the 2008 US Open: Russians Anna Chakvetadze and Maria Kirilenko, and Shahar Peer of Israel.

Chakvetadze, seeded tenth, suffered her earliest Grand Slam defeat in more than three years falling 1-6 6-2 6-3 to compatriot Ekaterina Makarova, ranked 56th in the world. Chakvetadze took the opening set in 25 minutes and looked to be on a good way to victory, but in the end she became a first-round loser.

No.22 seed Kirilenko lost to Tamira Paszek of Austria 6-3 3-6 6-4 and this year’s result is her worst at the US Open, before she reached second or third round.

Peer, seed No.24, got eliminated by China’s Li Na 2-6 6-0 6-1 despite superb play in the opening set. "In the first set I felt like I was playing against a wall," said Li after her great turnaround. (photos: Getty Images)

Amazing photos of women's tennis players by Lorenzo Agius

Anna Chakvetadze in Dubai captured by Lorenzo Agius

You simply must take a look at the beautiful photos of women’s tennis players taken in Dubai by photographer Lorenzo Agius. The tennis stars he captured in gorgeous dresses include Justine Henin, Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic, Anna Chakvetadze, Elena Demetieva, Agnes Szavay, Maria Kirilenko, Alona and Kateryna Bondarenko.

My favorites are the photos of Anna Chakvetadze, as well as the ones of Ana Ivanovic and Maria Kirilenko. But as I said, all the photos are beautiful, and you should check them out here [the web page is no longer available].

Carlos Rodriguez to coach Anna Chakvetadze

Carlos RodriguezCarlos Rodriguez, famous for coaching the recently retired Justine Henin throughout her impressive career, is probably going to coach Russian world number six Anna Chakvetadze.

It’s hard for me to picture Carlos coaching anyone but Justine, but it's great he’s ready to spread his knowledge to other talented players. The only thing is that Carlos doesn’t agree to travel, which mean that Anna will have to set up shop in Belgium (she currently lives in Moscow) to be able to train with him full-time. Anna Chakvetadze’s robbers found

Anna ChakvetadzeSeven suspects have been arrested in connection with the armed robbery of tennis star Anna Chakvetadze and her family.

World No.6 Chakvetadze, holder of seven Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles titles, attracted the robbers with her tennis successes which of course go together with high earnings. The 21-year-old Russian was tied up along with her parents on December 18 by six armed robbers who broke into their Moscow house and stole roughly $202,000 in money and valuables.

The suspects have been implicated in more than 50 other robberies. They are all between the ages of 25 and 40 and live in Moscow or the Moscow region. Some of the items seized during their arrest belonged to Chakvetadze, including a mobile phone and several pieces of jewelry. Read more »

Anna Chakvetadze beats Agnes Szavay, wins Open Gaz de France title

Anna Chakvetadze wins Paris titleTop seed Anna Chakvetadze defeated seventh-seeded Agnes Szavay 6-3 2-6 6-2 and became the Open Gaz de France champion for the first time in her career.

With this victory, the Russian extended her perfect career record in finals to 7-0.

At tomorrow's new ranking, Anna Chakvetadze will be one spot higher, at No.6, while Agnes Szavay will reach No.18 for the first time in her career (if she had won the tournament in Paris she would have become world No.17).

On her way to the title Chakvetadze defeated three home favorites Nathalie Dechy, Amelie Mauresmo and Marion Bartoli, and of course Hungarian Agnes Szavay in today’s final.

The titlist Chakvetadze collected $95,500, while Szavay earned $51,000. I hope the prize won’t bring back the thieves to Chakvetadze. (photo via Yahoo!)
