Justine Henin booked her place in the final of the Sony Ericsson Championships with a 6-4 6-4 win over Ana Ivanovic. The 20-year-old Serb was a tough opponent, but Henin is Henin.

World number four Ivanovic started the match with a 2-0 lead, but the Belgian quickly recovered and forced Ivanovic to battle from behind in both sets (in the first set from 5-2 down and from 3-0 in the second). Fighting Ivanovic offered glimpses of hope to her fans when she rebroke Henin in both the first and the second set. However, the Serb couldn’t keep up that tempo and in the end lost to the superior world number one.

To defend her title, the Belgian will need to overcome in-form Maria Sharapova who advanced to the final defeating Anna Chakvetadze. The two former champions of this important tournament will face each other at 4 p.m. (Madrid time) on Sunday.

I have no words to explain the Russian’s performance. She was strong, dominant, energetic, and … perfect, like she was not from this planet. Definitely her best performance in 2007.

Ivanovic was a tough opponent, even though you wouldn’t tell that from the result. I think that the Serb has nothing to regret after this match, she played well, only her serve could have been better. But even if her serve was at a fantastic level, she probably wouldn’t have defeated inspired Sharapova, only the result would have been different.

If Maria Sharapova continues this amazing form, she will take the word “favorite” from world number one Justine Henin at the season-ending Championships.

Ana Ivanovic secured her second win at the 2007 Sony Ericsson Championships with a 6-2 7-6 (9) victory over Daniela Hantuchova.

The 20-year-old Ivanovic almost won the first set 6-0, but the Slovakian broke Ivanovic at 5-0, and prolonged the set. The second set was much more dramatic, there were many very long games and not to mention the tie-break! Hantuchova was a break down for the first part of the second set, but managed to even the result to 4-all. The hard-serving Serb later broke the Slovakian for a 6-5 lead, but Hantuchova didn’t give up and took the match to a tie-break. Ana Ivanovic got a beautiful birthday present, a hard-fought 6-1 4-6 7-5 victory over Svetlana Kuznetsova at the Sony Ericsson Championships in Madrid.

The Serbian world number four broke the Russian world number two three times to confidently take the opening set.

The second set was a different story. Just when it seemed like Ivanovic will make quick work of Kuznetsova, since the Russian was three games down, everything started to change. Kuznetsova takes the fourth game of the second set and four more games for a 5-3 lead! The Russian made a tremendous comeback, and took the match to a more than exciting third set.

Ivanovic again started with a solid 3-0 lead, but Kuznetsova evened to 3-3. As the match progressed, it became more and more thrilling. The most exciting game for me was the 11th game of the decider. The end of the match was close, the result was 5-5, and Ivanovic saved two break points, after six deuces!
