Ana Ivanovic upset in US Open second round by Julie Coin

Ana Ivanovic at US OpenTop seed and world number one Ana Ivanovic of Serbia was shocked in the second round of the US Open falling to 188th-ranked Julie Coin of France 6-3 4-6 6-3.

Ivanovic was broken two times in the opening set, and although she played more steadily in the second and managed to stay in the match,  she couldn’t recover from getting 4-2 down in the decider and left the court with her head bowed.  You can’t expect anything else after 34 unforced errors.

Ivanovic’s first-round victory over Vera Dushevina wasn’t smooth, but I didn’t expect her to exit US Open so early. Still, I’m not too surprised.  Ivanovic had a thumb injury which forced her out of the Olympics and she didn’t enter the US Open in full form. Pressure was also a factor, I suppose, since she’s number one and top seed.

The 25-year-old Coin has now already won five matches at the US Open (she had to qualify for the event) and in the first round she beat world number 40 Casey Dellacqua. It’s worth mentioning that prior to this US Open Coin had never won a singles match in a Grand Slam.

In the third round Coin will face compatriot Amelie Mauresmo, seeded 32nd. (source: The New York Times, photo: Getty Images)

Ana Ivanovic survives Vera Dushevina at US Open

Ana Ivanovic at 2008 US OpenTop seed Ana Ivanovic scored an unconvincing victory over Vera Dushevina of Russia in the first round of the US Open.

The Serb looked as if on a way to an easy and quick victory when leading 6-1 4-2 and 0-30 on the Dushevina serve, but in the end Ivanovic earned her spot in the second round after surviving a scare and playing three sets to eventually win 6-1 4-6 6-4.

BTW: Ivanovic is not wearing the dress we thought she would, so luckily she differs from Caroline Wozniacki (not much, frankly, but still…). Anyway, it's so funny, she's wearing the same outfit to the one she replaced her Wimbledon dress with (phew, in different color though!) — and remember that her Wimbledon dress was the white version of the dress she was supposed to wear at the US Open. Almost embarrassing! (photo: Getty Images)

Caroline Wozniacki working Ana Ivanovic’s dress and shoes at US Open

Caroline Wozniacki US Open 2008 adidas dressNot only is Ana Ivanovic’s adidas outfit nothing special considering she’s number one in the world, not only is it the same outfit she wore at Wimbledon and abandoned it after one day, but at the US Open Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki worked it before Ivanovic.

Barricade V Summer Slams Ok, the shoes are unique, the Barricade V Summer Slams with Ivanovic's face, but there is something bizarre, Pilot Pen champion Wozniacki wore those same shoes in her first-round match at the US Open when she defeated Asha Rolle 6-2 6-1. Hahaha, what a mess!

Ivanovic starts her US Open campaign on Tuesday at 11am local time, and then we'll finally see whether she'll wear something else, which is more than welcome. (via Forty Deuce)

Flashback – Remember this Ana Ivanovic?

I came across this video, and hahaha look at Ana. This could even go under my series Tennis Players When They Were Kids, even though this was not so long ago, Ana has changed so much (fortunately)! I mean, compare this! Her English sounds more like Serbian, she looks too nervous, and although she’s cute she’s way better now.

At the 2008 US Open Ana Ivanovic will wear specially designed adidas shoes, a unique feminine version of the Barricade V – the Barricade V Summer Slam. In addition, the shoes will have this playful graphic of the world No.1, pearlized white on white, which stretches across the upper side of the shoe.

As for the outfit, I believe Ivanovic will wear the adidas piece shown in the photo after the cut. Read more »
