Besides doing yearly fashion retrospections for specific WTA players, Women's Tennis Blog is famous for reviewing outfits for every Grand Slam. The Australian Open is entering its second week and the time is just right for us to have a closer look at what the players are wearing. Last year Venus Williams grabbed all the attention with her EleVen designs, but the American is sadly absent this time. In 2012 the spotlight is more evenly distributed and brands such as Nike, Adidas and Fila are leading the pack.

Caroline Wozniacki’s love life is booming, at least its online representation suggests that, and her fashion designer Stella McCartney opted for the color of passion for the world No.1’s Australian Open. Wozniacki accessorized the red dress with a heart-shaped Danish flag pendant that her boyfriend Rory McIlroy gave her for Christmas.

Adidas Adizero used a shade of red for their predominantly peach dress worn by Ana Ivanovic, Daniela Hantuchova and Sorana Cirstea.

Serena Williams is wearing a blue Nike dress with wide tank straps and pleated bottom.

The American opened her Australian Open campaign with custom-made headband and sneakers celebrating Black History Month.

Notice the cute small balls adorning the socks!

Petra Kvitova is, as always, wearing a two-piece Nike outfit, style similar to her 2011 apparel.

Maria Sharapova is wearing a white Nike Maria Statement Slam Dress with electric green straps and a black Nike logo.

Fila is now all over the place, well-represented by Kim Clijsters, Svetlana Kuznetsova and the new additions to the family, Jelena Jankovic and Vera Zvonareva.

Defending champion Kim Clijsters is working a black V-neck shirt with lemon accents and the same shirt in white. A simple black skirt is always there.

Svetlana Kuznetsova is dressed similarly, exposing her "Pain doesn’t kill me, I kill the pain" tattoo.

Jelena Jankovic is still in her first month of promoting Fila, after her three-year contract with Anta has expired, and at the Australian Open she's looking great in an orange Center Court dress.

Another new Fila member, Vera Zvonareva, who used to wear K-Swiss, is in the neutral tones. Sweat marks are spoiling the image, though.

Bethanie Mattek Sands is not exciting us this time. Her look is absolutely toned down. In the photo below you can see her teamed up with Lacoste-clad Jarmila Gajdosova, wearing a very regular Under Armour long-sleeve bright yellow shirt and a white skirt. For her singles match in the first round, Bethanie wore a simple green tank.

Mentioning Lacoste, Samantha Stosur left the brand to sign with Asics, but her white Asics dress didn't get much exposure as the home favorite suffered an emotionally-painful upset in the very first round.

Whose Australian Open 2012 style is your favorite? For me, number ones are Ana Ivanovic, Daniela Hantuchova and Sorana Cirstea in the Adidas Adizero dress (Cirstea upset Stosur in it!), because of the daring combination of colors and a signature modern yet simple design of the line. The runner-up position I would award to Serena Williams' look. (photos: Adidas, Tidalist, Slice, Australian Open, Life)

Interesting developments! A few days ago we learnt that Ana Ivanovic ended the second edition of her cooperation with fitness coach Scott Byrnes and now we're hearing that the former world No.1 is currently working with her boyfriend Adam Scott's physio, renowned golf osteopath Tina Maio of Australia.

Byrnes supposedly had some exercises for Ivanovic that she thought no longer suited her needs and Maio came up with better solutions for her shoulder and abdominal problems. However, it is still not defined whether the Serb will hire a new fitness coach full-time.
Hantuchova was the first to open the season, wearing last year's well-known pink Adidas Women's Fall Adilibria dress, which the Slovak had worn at the 2010 US Open.

From January's Australian Open to April, Ivanovic and Hantuchova wore the beautiful purple Adidas Adilibria dress with an open back, which looks nice but is not favorable for tanning. At Indian Wells Hantuchova also sported the tank from the collection, combined with a white skort.

In Stuttgart Hantuchova launched the pink and orange version of the dress and it was present throughout the clay season, including Roland Garros, and the start of the grass-court season in Birmingham and Eastbourne. In Birmingham semifinals Hantuchova and Ivanovic even played against each other in the same dresses – is that the thing Bethanie Mattek Sands dreads?

At Wimbledon Ivanovic and Hantuchova launched the Adidas Women's Fall Adizero Feather dress, but right after the white Grand Slam they went for the colored version of the dress.

At Stanford Hantuchova and Ivanovic displayed the intense blue, and at the US Open we got to see the sharp red version on them.

Towards the end of the season Hantuchova switched back to the blue dress, while Ivanovic remained faithful to the pink one and defended her season-ending Bali title in it.

I have always been a fan of Adidas, especially of their dresses, and all their designs for 2011 were beautiful. The only thing is that there have been too many practically identical red/pink dresses in a short period: from the last year's Adidas Women's Fall Adilibria dress to the fresh pink and orange Adizero dress during the claycourt season and Adidas Women's Fall Adizero Feather dress. I can hardly make the difference, especially between the first and the third one.

If I had to pick my favorite, it would be the royal purple with green dress, but the pink/orange one is also amazing, especially for red clay. What's your impression of Adidas' efforts in 2011?

Reminder: Hantuchova used to wear Nike and in 2008 I made an overview of her on-court outfits. Overall, the Slovak looks equally good in both brands. As for Ivanovic, last year I presented her outfits in comparison to Maria Kirilenko's, while in 2008 I went a step further and on top of the article I made a video, presented above.

Off-season is time for looking back on the tennis year behind, and we're doing that by our reflections and analysis, but it's also the time of preparation for the next year and sports designers are already working hard, actually numerous models that the WTA stars are expected to wear in 2012 have already leaked.

Maria Sharapova is expected to go for white with green details for the Australian section of the season. And that's not all – here you can see even more new Nike clothes.

As for Adidas, this week the brand launched their new Barricade 7.0 shoes and in the promo Andrea Petkovic showcased several pieces from the Adidas' new collection, in purple, light blue and red. I was confirmed that those are the designs we'll be seeing on the courts in 2012.

In addition, yesterday I came across dresses possibly intended for Caroline Wozniacki's and Ana Ivanovic's 2012 Australian Open.

These two we might see on Wozniacki next year.

And these might adorn Ivanovic's body in the season ahead.

Do you happen to have any insider info about the future tennis outfits? Any confirmations?

UPDATE: I've just come across this photo of Ivanovic on Facebook, which confirms that her 2012 Australian Open outfit will be the peach and red dress.

Looking elegant in a black Cavalli dress, Ivanovic attended the Gala Celebration for the 2011 Presidents Cup in Melbourne with her boyfriend on November 15.

Again all dressed-up, the two were together at the Presidents Cup opening ceremony on November 16.

Just like last year, Ana Ivanovic overshadowed her overall unsuccessful season, at least in the light of her form of three years ago, by winning the year-ending Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions in Bali. In addition, the Serb celebrated her 24th birthday on the joyous day.

Ivanovic reached the final with two victories in straight sets, against Roberta Vinci in the quarterfinals and Nadia Petrova in the semis. In the last match of the tournament, the focused Ivanovic defeated Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3 6-0, losing just seven points in the second set, and awoke the hopes of a better 2012.

I think next year is going to be big, and I really want to sort of play tournaments that I'm ready for and really go and take my chances because you know I think especially the first half of the year I have nothing to defend and I can take my opportunities and hopefully keep the level and break the Top 10.

All the players adore the Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions, primarily because of the exotic setting in Bali, and it seems that the environment is especially stimulating for Ivanovic. However, the time has come to change the location, and the event will move to Sofia, Bulgaria. As of 2012 and there will be no more sun and sea in the middle of winter. (photos: Roberto Pudyanto)

Ana Ivanovic has a chance to celebrate her 24th birthday by defending her Bali title, having advanced to the final by defeating Nadia Petrova despite a set point against her in the second set. Her opponent in the title match will be Anabel Medina Garrigues whose second straight opponent retired from the match injured. Hopefully she will not bring bad luck to Ivanovic, who has already had an injury scare because of a fall in Bali quarterfinals.

Ivanovic started the match by losing only three points in the first four games and after winning the set the Serb held three points for a 3-0 lead in the second set. That was when Petrova's comeback started, Ivanovic was throwing herself to the ground in entertaining rallies and the Russian even had a set point at 5-4. However, Ivanovic held for 5-5 and finished off the match 6-1 7-5.

Medina Garrigues said she didn't have many retirement victories in her life, but in Bali all her victories in the eight-women field came via retirements. In the quarterfinals it was top seed Marion Bartoli pulling out with an ankle injury, and now in the semifinals Sabine Lisicki retired at 6-3 4-6 4-0 with a back injury. Lisicki took painkillers before the match and despite having great will to continue, after having treatment in the second set and taking the match to the decider, she ran out of gas and ended her participation in Bali. (photos: Robertus Pudyanto)
