Agnieszka Radwanska upsets Svetlana Kuznetsova at Australian Open

Agnieszka RadwanskaPoland's Agnieszka Radwanska, the player who stunned defending champion Maria Sharapova in the third round of the 2007 US Open, scored her second major Grand Slam upset with a 6-3 6-4 win over second seed Svetlana Kuznetsova to reach the last 16 at the Australian Open.

Radwanska, seeded 29th, raced into a 3-0 lead in the first set. Although Kuznetsova quickly leveled, her inconsistency returned and the confident Krakow teenager took three straight games to win the first set. The 18-year-old Radwanska rallied from 0-3 down in the second to take a 4-3 advantage, and after Kuznetsova tied, Radwanska took the final two games to score the victory.

"I was not playing against her, I was playing against me," said extremely disappointed Kuznetsova, who believed to be better prepared than even for the Australian Open. However, Radwanska believes that her determination was what gave her the victory: "I played against her a few times, always losing, so I said 'no more'."

Hantuchova upset by Radwanska at Zurich Open

Daniela HantuchovaSlovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova became the fifth of eight seeds to leave the Zurich Open early (after Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic, Amelie Mauresmo, and Serena Williams). The seventh seeded Slovakian lost to Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska 6-3 6-3 in the second round. This means that Hantuchova’s chances of qualifying for the season-ending WTA Championships in Madrid are getting slimmer.

World number nine Hantuchova partly blames the cold for her loss: "I had a really hard time today trying to catch my breath in between points. I have been fighting a cold for the past few days and I really just had nothing left and became very tired out there." Read more »

Shahar Peer stops Agnieszka Radwanska at US Open 2007

Agnieszka Radwanska’s run at the US Open ended with a 6-4 6-1 defeat by eighteen-seeded Shahar Peer of Israel. The teenager from Krakow became famous for upsetting defending champion Maria Sharapova in the third round, but she was not strong enough to overcome her next obstacle, world number nineteen Shahar Peer.

In her second Grand Slam quarterfinal of the year, Shahar Peer will face the winner of the match Anna Chakvetadze vs. Tamira Paszek.

Maria Sharapova's interview after the loss to Agnieszka Radwanska at the US Open 2007

Defending champion Maria Sharapova was shocked by Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland to crash out of the US Open 2007 on Saturday.

I couldn't wait to read what Sharapova had to say about this disappointment. The most discussed thing about this third round match was Radwanska's excessive moving, or to say dancing, when receiving Sharapova's second serve. According to Maria, it didn't distract her. Moreover, she gave her opponent all the credit. Read the interview for the details.

  • Just talk about the last six games because it seemed like everything just fell part.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, although I won many games in a row after losing the first and being down 1-0, you know, you'd think I'd have the momentum in the third set with a break. But I just didn't really feel that way inside of me for some reason today. You know, just going to have those kind of days where you're always trying to come through and always trying to find a way even though you don't feel like things are exactly going your way. You know, that's just what happens. Read more »

Defending champion Maria Sharapova out in the third round of the US Open 2007

Thirtieth seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland defeated defending champion and second seed Maria Sharapova 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 to reach the fourth round of the US Open 2007. Wow!

The biggest favorites for the title (Jankovic, Ivanovic, Henin, the Williams sisters) Sharapova couldn’t have faced before the final, since they are all in the upper half of the draw. But it seems that the draw was not easy enough for the Russian.

Sharapova didn’t display her best tennis in the match against the teenager from Krakow, as she made 12 double faults, and 49 unforced errors, while winning only 23% of the points on her second serve. The problems with the serve may be caused by the fact that she had to change her service motion because of a shoulder injury which has been bothering her during most part of the season. Read more »
