Playing just her third tournament since December’s life-threatening knife attack, two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova lost to Madison Brengle 6-3 1-6 6-2 in the second round of Wimbledon, despite entering the Grand Slam as a favorite, having impressively won the grasscourt lead-up in Birmingham.

The 11th-seeded Kvitova was shining at times with her 36 winners, but outweighed them with 50 unforced errors, while her American opponent finished the match with -4 winners-to-unforced-errors differential. After forcing the decider by racing through the second set, Kvitova had to have her blood pressure checked in the closing stage of the match, apparently struggling in the heat.

The world No.95 Brengle now leads Kvitova 3-1 in their head-to-head stats, having beaten the Czech on clay, grass and hardcourts.

  1. Damn I was rooting for Kvitova to go far in this tournament 🙁

Most depressing loss of the day still has to go to Vekic losing to Konta though, wasn’t rooting for any of them in particular but that was some epic third set.

  2. I was also rooting for Petra! I was thinking she could have gone up to SF.

@C – I was rooting for Donna. It was a nice hug after the match. They were both emotional after.

  3. C, yeah, I watched the third set of that match. Donna should be proud of her performance, but it must be devastating to lose after such a battle.
