Simona Halep needed exactly one hour to dispatch Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1 6-1 and make the quarterfinals of the 2017 French Open where she’ll face Elina Svitolina.

The world No.4 Halep had never before in their six previous meetings on clay beaten Suarez Navarro, but today she constantly kept her guard, used a variety of shots and moved beautifully. The Romanian third seed is for sure one of the favorites to win this Roland Garros.

For a place in the semifinals, Halep will face fifth seed Elina Svitolina, as the Ukrainian came back from 2-5 down in the third set and just two points from defeat to end the miracle run of unseeded Croatian Petra Martic, who played well but couldn’t find a way to finish the match. En route to a 4-6 6-3 7-5 fourth-round triumph, which included five consecutive games won in the third set, Svitolina was troubled by a back injury, but she hopes to be strong and ready for her upcoming quarterfinal.

My photographer Jimmie48 is still at the French Open, so stay tuned for his Monday’s photos which I’ll post tonight.

  1. The popcorn QF match for me would be Simona vs Elina and Kiki vs Timea. If Elina wins over Simona, I think she has the greatest chance to be a first time slam champion! Kiki is also touted to win the title!
