Big names at the 2017 Mutua Madrid Open continue to struggle as the majority of top seeds have failed to make the tournament’s third round.

After Karolina Pliskova, Maria Sharapova, Madison Keys, Garbine Muguruza and Johanna Konta all had to pack in early in the Caja Magica, another high-profile player was added to the list of casualties on Tuesday as 2016 Madrid finalist Dominika Cibulkova lost to France’s Oceane Dodin in straight sets.

In the afternoon, Simona Halep narrowly avoided being added to the group of early-losing top players, escaping a loss to Roberta Vinci in a third-set tiebreak. While Halep pushed through, some of the young guns in the draw had a tougher time.

CiCi Bellis, the young American tennis hope playing her first ever Madrid, lost in straight sets to Sorana Cirstea, while Donna Vekic, watched by boyfriend Stan Wawrinka, got comprehensively beaten by Japan’s Misaki Doi.

With many of the most famous players already out, two of them left in the draw are due to face off on Wednesday — past and future world #1 Angelique Kerber will face Eugenie Bouchard for a spot in the tournament’s quarterfinals.
