Every now and then the horrendous breakup that Caroline Wozniacki went through crosses my mind, when her fiancé Rory McIlroy, whom she had dated for three years, broke off their engagement over the phone in May 2014, after they had already sent their wedding invitations. The WTA star handled that very hard period with grace and now, three years later, for the first time she's officially revealing her new love: 33-year-old NBA forward David Lee.
While the Northern Irish golfer quickly moved on to a new woman, a former PGA employee named Erica Stoll, whom he got engaged to in December 2015, Caro went through a period of constructive solitude and even when she found a new boyfriend, she didn't rush to mention him publicly.
McIlroy, on the other hand, wasn't as graceful and he even referred to Wozniacki in a recent interview for the Irish Independent, talking about how much better his soon-to-be-wife is than Wozniacki, whom he dated when they were both ranked No.1 in their respective sports:
I thought at the time that being with someone that was in a similar position to you was the obvious answer. But it isn't, because you can never get away from it. You can never detach yourself and try to come back to the real world. And that's why I feel in such a good place now. I don't feel Erica wants to change me in any way. I can be myself around her; there's no bullshit, no acting, no show.
After the heartbreaking period that Wozniacki went through, I'm so happy to see that she's moved on and now she officially has a handsome new guy. I have to say that I admire how she handled that horrific period with class, despite the embarrassment of having a fiancé who realized he wasn't ready for marriage after the guests had already been invited to the wedding and who then decided to end it all via a brief telephone call! Ugh!
The 26-year-old tennis ace revealed the new relationship in Instagram stories on Valentine's Day, posing with a bouquet of roses, saying:
Happy Valentine's Day everyone! I'm a lucky girl! Thank you @dlee042
Later on, Wozniacki's brother Patrick Wozniacki confirmed the news, saying:
I think it's really good. … He's a clever guy, also considerate. … And he is obviously very athletic as a professional basketball player.
Caroline and David, the San Antonio Spurs player, were first rumored to be dating at the 2016 US Open. I hope this relationship will be as beautiful as Caro deserves and I'm happy to add it to my WTA Players and their Love Partners page. (via Daily Mail)
