First off, Karolina Pliskova faced Kristina Mladenovic in what became an epic three-and-a-half-hour encounter thanks to Fed Cup’s rule of not having tiebreaks in the third set. Pliskova ended up winning the marathon affair 6-3 4-6 16-14, giving the Czech’s an early lead.

The Czech victory put the pressure on Carolina Garcia, who faced the task of avoiding the French team to be 0-2 after Day 1, The Frenchwoman's opponent was Czech Fed Cup veteran Petra Kvitova, who didn’t have a particularly good day though, hitting more than 50 unforced errors on the way to being upset in straight sets.
