WTA world reacts to Monica Puig's gold medal: Legends, top players and rising stars all congratulate the Puerto Rican

Yesterday at the Rio Olympics, Monica PuigΒ became the first Puerto Rican to win the gold medalΒ for her country, beating the reigning Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber, reigning Roland Garros champion Garbine Muguruza and two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova on the way. The spectacular and unexpected achievement gave goosebumps to the 22-year-old's nation, tennis fans worldwide, as well as to her WTA colleagues of all calibers.     Monica showed pure determination in every match at the Olympics. Hope it can carryover to the US Open for her and future matches. Great job!

    I think she was playing with a little bit of freedom at the start of the match. She was an absolute unknown going into the tourney. Making the final, no one really expected her to win Gold. The pressure started to mount once we got to the third set. Still great match to watch, I love watching the tight matches.
