The first round of the 2016 French Open concluded on Tuesday with plenty of drama, as the Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber made an early exit and Victoria Azarenka had to retire from her match with a knee injury. Our photographer Jimmie48 covered these two standout matches, as well as matches including Serena WilliamsAna Ivanovic, Eugenie Bouchard, Andrea Petkovic, Laura Robson, and others.

  1. As much as I don’t like Vika, that was painful to watch. I would much more prefer she loses simply because Karine was better. Respect for her for trying to fight through it, even going as far as saving a match point. But we’re only at the halfmark of the season, so retiring was a sensible things to do. Still, so many injuries are plaguing Vika, her career would be so much bigger than what it already is if it weren’t for all those injuries.
As for the outifts… I totally missed Alize Lim, OMG, how could I have miss her? And especialy that outfit. Without a doubt, it’s… special.
As for Adidas/Y3, I already didn’t like the result of their last year cooperation and I totally hate the zebra outfit. Black (or even black and white) is not a good for tennis IMHO, it’s a sport, not a funeral. And the zebra patterns itself wouldn’t be so bad, but there is also this layered jacquard mesh overlay of the skirt and then the faux suspenders… Too much of everything, it distracts me to the point I’m happy that Kerber lost and I’m hoping the rest of the zebra crowd will lose quickly too.

  2. Maddie, haha I can’t believe you hate the zebra collection so much that you’d like all the players to lose quickly haha. I actually like the designs, especially Ana’s dress.

  3. Yeah, Ana’s version is actually much better than that horrible thing that Kerber wore and Halep is still wearing. And hey, it’s Ana, she could put on a potate sack and would look great 😉
Also, don’t be so surprised that I wan’t them all to lose. I mean I love good tennis and it’s great to have all those wonderful matches, but ultimately, I am a die-hard Aga’s and Nole’s fan. I’d be happy if those two won everything 😉
