During their junior years, Britain’s Laura Robson & Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard were one of the closest friends on tour. Ever since then, not only has their friendship faded away, but their careers have taken a different turn as well.

While Genie Bouchard struggled to produce results after reaching her career-high ranking of #5 and making the Wimbledon final, Robson was faced with a career-threatening injury. The young Briton made another attempt to successfully return to the WTA tour on Thursday, following a less than successful ITF tournament campaign last summer.

Unfortunately for Robson, her match proved that the road back to her old success will be long and rocky, as Robson was comprehensively beaten by Slovakia’s Magdalena Rybarikova in straight set.

Former compatriot Bouchard escaped a first-round loss in the evening session, rallying back to a three-set win after surrendering the first set to Japan’s Risa Ozaki.

Friday at the 2016 BNP Paribas Open will be all about the Williams sisters, as both Venus Williams and sister Serena are due to play their first match inside Stadium 1, alongside plenty of other top seeds that will be in action as well.
