Andrea Petkovic improved to 3-0 in career meetings with Garbine Muguruza, by beating the Spaniard 6-1 5-7 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Qatar Total Open.

The unseeded Petkovic raced through the first set, not giving the fourth-seeded Muguruza any chances and converting both break points she earned. After the disappointing first set, Muguruza took a medical timeout and brought a cleaner game to the table in the longer second set, forcing the decider, in which Petkovic again dominated, not facing a break point throughout. Muguruza and Petkovic both hit 29 winners in the match, but Muguruza made 22 unforced errors more than Petkovic.

The world No.27 Petkovic displayed a very clean performance, while Muguruza was frustrated with her game and even had a heated conversation with her coach Sam Sumyk on a changeover, saying: “Tell me something I don’t know.”

In the semifinals, Petkovic’s opponent will be Jelena Ostapenko, who was the first to make the final four by beating Zheng Saisai in the battle of the underdogs. (photos: Jimmie48)

  1. Poor Sumyk on the exchange with Garbi..he met with her wrath. Did you also notice that she started speaking in Spanish near the end of their conversation? Sumyk replied, “Oh so you are speaking to Spanish Television, now?” I don’t see them being together much longer.
