I’ve only recently become hooked on Instagram (make sure to follow Women’s Tennis Blog there) and browsing through dozens of player profiles I came across this wonderful childhood photo of world No.26 Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, a perfect addition to my Little Tennis Stars series.
The photo is from the first day of school. Aaaaw, so cute! Look at that stylish vintage outfit and the neat hairdo.
Schmiedlova started playing tennis at the age of seven, but she didn’t like it immediately, her love for the sport grew gradually. The Slovak started pursuing tennis more seriously when she became the Under 12 No.1 in her country.
Schmiedlova made the French Open junior final in 2012, while last year she won her first WTA titles (Katowice and Bucharest) and in Rio de Janeiro finished runner-up.
After losing her Brisbane International opener to Varvara Lepchenko 6-2 6-1 earlier this month, the 21-year-old recorded her first victory of the season in Sydney, upsetting sixth seed Timea Bacsinszky 1-6 6-1 6-3 in the first round.
Anna Karolina’s career has only just begun and currently she’s at her career-high ranking. She describes herself as shy and quite, while if she weren’t a tennis player, she would’ve studied medicine for becoming a doctor.
