Sunday at the 2016 Brisbane International had plenty of fun in store. The tournament invited young tennis fans for a fun-filled exhibition featuring some of the kids’ biggest TV heroes and star players Roger Federer, Radek Stepanek, Garbine Muguruza and Victoria Azarenka.
Inside the tournament village, Queensland’s own Priscila Hon received some very special preparation for her first-round match later this week, getting covered in green slime on the Nickelodeon stage.
It wasn’t all fun and games on Sunday, though. The light-hearted entertainment soon made room for the business end of the tournament with main-draw play of the 2016 season getting underway.
Varvara Lepchenko will go down in the history books as the first WTA player to win a main-draw match in 2016. The American got past Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in quick fashion.
Inside Pat Rafter Arena, Dominika Cibulkova had to fight a lot harder for her first win of the new year after dropping the first set to Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer. The Slovakian turned the match around, delivering an impressive performance late into the third set and the spectators were treated to more than two hours of thrilling tennis.
Andrea Petkovic’s match against Teliana Pereira was a much quicker affair, as the popular German swept past the Brazilian in two quick sets. Petkovic is now looking to face the winner of the first-round encounter between Maria Sharapova & Ekaterina Makarova.
The first round at the 2016 Brisbane International will continue on Monday, featuring the first matches of Victoria Azarenka, Belinda Bencic and many others so keep checking back for all the latest from Brisbane!
