Jelena Jankovic won her second WTA title this season, clinching the 2015 Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open championship on Sunday.

Playing Germany’s Angelique Kerber, Jankovic started out trailing in the first set as Kerber managed to gain a healthy lead over the Serbian in the opening phase of the match. After dropping the first set, momentum slowly but steadily shifted in Jankovic’s favour and the former world #1 managed to swing the second-set tiebreak in her direction.

Going into the third set, it quickly became apparent that Kerber was running out of steam, leaving the court for a medical timeout at 0-3. The short break wasn’t enough to derail Jankovic who kept her cool and closed the deal, securing her second WTA title after her successful run in Guangzhou in September.

Jankovic did not have much time to celebrate her successful week in Hong Kong though, since the Serbian left for the airport just two hours after the final, flying straight to Luxembourg for her next tournament. Angelique Kerber, on the other hand, is off to Moscow, before competing in the WTA Finals in Singapore.

The exciting final topped off what was a hugely successful week for the Hong Kong tournament. Having only been held for the second time this year, the tournament made a huge jump in terms of crowd interest in 2015 as the final was played in front of a sold-out stadium, filled with highly-enthusiastic fans.

The fantastic atmosphere resonated with the players as well, all of which vowed to come back to Hong Kong in the future as the Asian metropolis seems to be gearing up to become a major fixture in future WTA calendars.

  1. With her win in HK, JJ has a great chance on qualifying for Zhuhai. She’s into QF of Luxembourg and most likely run into the finals considering most top seeds tumbled during first 2 rounds.
