Rain shortens Monday at the Rogers Cup

Monday was supposed to be a day packed with tennis action at the 2015 Rogers Cup as the main draw at Canada’s premier tennis event was scheduled to kick off with no less than 12 singles matches on the schedule. Unfortunately, only a fraction of the planned schedule could be completed as intense rain showers started around one hour into the day, going on all the way into the evening hours.

While the weather forced most observers to stare miserably into the rain for the whole duration of the day, the tournament’s top 8 seeds were kept busy inside during the All Access Hour, answering the media and recording various video clips.

One player that had particularly important news to share was Petra Kvitova as the Czech Wimbledon champion has been diagnosed with mono before this tournament, the illness apparently being the cause of her on-going exhaustion that forced her to skips Indian Wells and Miami this spring. Despite the quite severe diagnosis, Kvitova is cleared for competition and treatments on the illness have already begun.

After several hours of downtime, all but one match finally got canceled. Sabine Lisicki vs. Venus Williams was the only evening match to be played and it wasn’t before 10 PM local time that it got underway. Lisicki seemed determined to make sure everybody gets to bed in time, sweeping by Venus 6-0 6-3 in barely more than an hour of playing time.

Tomorrow will be a packed day at the 2015 Rogers Cup as plenty of Monday matches need to be carried over, resulting in no less than 22 singles matches on the schedule. Unfortunately, the weather forecast does not look exactly promising and the tennis fans in Canada might be in for even more rain delays.
