Serena Williams had to dig deep to win her 24th straight Grand Slam match today in the third round of Wimbledon, as home favorite Heather Watson was twice just two points away from becoming the first British WTA player since 1979 to beat a reigning world No.1.

Watson was absolutely dominated in the first set, but showed her grit in the second set, miraculously winning six games in a row with three service breaks to level the match and race into an unbelievable 3-0 lead in the deciding set. Williams clawed back to 3-3 and held serve in the seventh game of the set, but Watson held her own as well and amazingly earned another break to lead 5-4. Not surprisingly, Williams eventually managed to prevail 6-2 4-6 7-5, but had nothing but praise for her opponent, saying:

I have had some tough losses but that was probably my toughest match. I think she played unbelievable and should have won the match.

Next up for Serena is her big sis Venus, the winner of five Wimbledon titles, who today got past Serbia’s Aleksandra Krunic 6-3 6-2. Serena is 14-11 against Venus in their career meetings, including a 3-2 lead at Wimbledon. Their first Wimbledon clash was 15 years ago. Imagine, Serena and Venus have a total of 21 Wimbledon titles between them (singles, doubles and mixed doubles).

  1. Just finished looking at a repeat of this match on ABC, and listening to Patrick McEnroe and Mary-Joe Fernandez commentate was so disgusting and quite annoying. They ranted and raved over Heather’s amazing shot-making, but whenever Serena made amazing shots, as she fought her way to victory in the third set, little or nothing was said by them. I could even hear Patrick’s whispers through his mic as the ball was in play in the third set (how unprofessional!). I’m so sick and tired of this mockery commentating being the usual for most present-day American commentators when Serena is on the court. I mean it’s simply ridiculous! How could they or anyone ever underestimate the superior comeback skills of Serena Williams? Just count the times and ways she’s fought her way back to win multiple matches that she was on the brink of losing. The GOAT, Serena, came back from a set down and 3-0 in the third to ultimately win the match. Despite the partiality shown by the British fans toward Heather Watson, Serena didn’t cave in, thank God; she kept fighting and coming up with more aces and amazing returns. And all this emphasis put on a calendar and/or Serena slam needs to cease!Serena has nothing to prove. It’s pretty obvious why she’s always, I mean always, the talk of the town whenever she plays each and every match that she plays. What she’s accomplished since the start of her illustrious career in tennis says it all. What she did on Friday was simply amazing and quite the norm for this remarkable tennis champion. ABC, thanks for re-airing this match, and most importantly, for the wonderful mini documentary on Serena’s stellar career, including all the facts, stats, records, and how she even outshines many male/ female athletes on the scene today. Everything you mentioned is what folk should be putting emphasis on when they open their mouths to speak of this great champion, instead of a Serena Slam or Calendar Slam. As you put it so beautifully, what she’s accomplished during her overall career in women’s tennis is a far greater accomplishment than a Calendar Slam. “Go, Serena, go! You’ll be holding up that Wimbledon trophy this year as the 2015 champ. It shall be done.”

  2. Congrats to Heather Watson, for a real fight out there against Serena! She should have at least won some sort of prize for getting the most balls back. It was amazing to see her dig deep and get down so low to return many of Serena’s shots. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any other female tennis player get so many balls back in a match. I agree with Serena that Heather will be much more than a top 10 player. I see her winning a major, if she keeps playing the way she did in this match against Serena. “Great job, Heather!”

  3. The Real Deal, Serena’s form and career achievements are unparalleled. She’s hitting a new record practically weekly and no one can doubt that.
