Eugenie Bouchard was the finalist at last year’s Wimbledon and now she’s out in round one, falling to a Chinese Wimbledon debutante without Grand Slam match wins to her name! Of course, a lot has happened in the one-year period and the highly-marketable Canadian has now lost 12 of her last 14 matches, which will be reflected in her upcoming fall in the rankings, to a position in the 23-25 range.

The 12th-seeded Bouchard lost to world No.117 qualifier Duan Ying-Ying 7-6(3) 6-4 and we can only speculate whether this is finally rock bottom or the slump can get even deeper. Bouchard said that her preparations for Wimbledon were minimal, as she should have skipped the tournament because of her grade two abdominal tear, but simply had to show up since its her favorite event. Remember, at last week’s Eastbourne Bouchard retired in her second match, citing an ab injury.

What’s more, thanks to Ben Rothenberg‘s tweet I learned that Bouchard received a Wimbledon dress code violation, as a black bra was showing beneath her white bra. You know what they say, misfortune never comes alone.

Another big upset on Tuesday included the loss of third seed Simona Halep, who was a semifinalist last year. The Romanian, who admitted to having low confidence now, lost in the first round to Jana Cepelova 5-7 6-4 6-3.

Impressively, defending champion Petra Kvitova needed just 35 minutes to advance to the second round with a 6-1 6-0 victory over Kiki Berthens. Thirty-five minutes! Kvitova lost just one point on serve! (photo: Jimmie48)

  1. What can I say, people put too high of expectations on her based on her grand slam results, while ignoring all the early exits last year. In fact, she had a better result at Rome this year than she did last year. It was too soon to anoint her for success, and look at what that pressure has done to her. On the bright side, it’s also too soon to write her off.

Madison keys was wearing a black bra underneath her sports bra as well, but she wasn’t stopped. They wouldn’t need to wear them if those tanks offered support! :O

  2. Weird, my comment didn’t seem to post:
Anyways, people were wrong to put so much attention on Bouchard, while ignoring the fact that she had so many first round exits at every tournament outside of the slams. Nearly all of the results she’s had are the same as last year. In fact, winning one match at Rome and at Eastbourne was better than her result last year! It’s wrong for all these pundits to anoint someone for greatness so soon, but on the bright side, just as wrong to right them off.

How come Madison keys didn’t have to change bras? She had a black one underneath as well, which says something about the support those tanks offer!

  3. Is there a Wimbledon official checking women’s underwear before they get on court? That’s just ridiculous. Ga is right those Nike tanks have zero support.
As for Genie, She needs to get fitter and stronger and get her confidence back. I never saw her as a true top contender but I think she has what it takes to make it back into the top ten.

  4. It happens to the best of them that they have a major win then they exit early the next big tournament. Maybe Bouchard just had a really good day when she won the grand slam last year. so much pressure!

  5. I watched some of this match between Bouchard and Duan Ying-Ying on ESPN in the USA. I am amazed how the American announcers disrespect the Chinese. Chris Fowler and Chissie Evert kept calling Duan “Ying-Yang”. Although Chrissie still gets incorrectly called Everett by the lazy American press. They need to do their homework!

  6. Ga, good observation about Madison. But even if the tanks offer low support, why would they risk and pick a black bra. There are so many good white bras out there.

    Jim, wow Ying-Yang! Unbelievable! That’s so childish…

  7. Marija, I think berlei may want to try finding some more ambassadors! 😉

Those espn commentators were doing the same thing with Wozniacki’s first round Chinese opponent. They also say just as immature things about Japanese Kei Nishikori too. It’s very annoying, much like how it was early on in the Williams’ careers

  8. I still think that Bouchard has potential to be in the top 10 at least because last year’s results weren’t a coincidence. You don’t forget to play tennis over night.

And hi Marija, long time no see 😉

  9. Ga, wait, Berlei is also sponsoring Bouchard? I know about Serena… I can’t believe that about the commentators. They are mature people and supposed to be professionals in their jobs.

Manfred, wow hi!!! Really long time no see! I was wondering what you were up to! 🙂 Is everything going well? About Bouchard, sure, you don’t forget to play tennis, but there are also other factors that affect a player’s game. We’ve seen quite a few slumps of players that actually never returned to their old game. Look at Anna Chakvetadze, for example. Actually, top-level consistency is very rare.

Emman Damian, there sure are a number of contenders ready to take her place. Although, I’m not suggesting it’s over for Bouchard, but the road has really gotten tough.

  10. I believe the pressure did really sink in on Genie. She just needed some time off and practice. She’ll comeback soon. Other rising stars will step up on her place. Maybe Svitolina, Bencic and Keys?

  11. hey Marija,

yes idd, long time 😉 I am running TSFTennis.com with Erwin Ong. I am sure you remember him. I am fine. How about you? 🙂 Yah but I am wearing my “positivo” glasses at the moment and just want Bouchard to make it back to where she belongs, which imo is the Top 5.

Glad to see you are still going strong btw and finally got a new banner 😉

  12. Manfred, I definitely remember Erwin Ong and actually I’ve been wondering what he’s been up to. I think you told me some time ago that he stopped doing his own blog and got hired by a big tennis company, traveling the world.

Jade, sure, she’s not, but she was, not that long ago.
