Third-seeded wildcard Samantha Stosur rallied to beat first-time WTA finalist Kristina Mladenovic 3-6 6-2 6-3 in the final of the Internationaux de Strasbourg on Saturday.

The 54th-ranked Mladenovic recorded two breaks to Stosur’s one to take the first set, but in the following sets the 26th-ranked Stosur got back on her feet and raised her control level, saving all the five break points she faced and in one hour and 55 minutes the Australian was celebrating her seventh career title and first this season. Actually, prior to Strasbourg, Stosur had won just eight matches in 2015, while this week alone she scored five victories.

The 31-year-old Stosur’s route to the €34,677 trophy was interesting in a way that all her five victories leading to the title were against young guns: first against defending champion Monica Puig, then Lesia Tsurenko in the second round, Ajla Tomljanovic in the quarterfinals, Sloane Stephens in the semis and finally against the 22-year-old Mladenovic. (photo: Jimmie48)

  1. Hopefully this gives her some confidence going into the French Open. Sam Stosur has really been playing a mess the past 12 months.
