Sunday at the 2015 Mutua Madrid Open had an incredible selection of tennis in store, as most of the world tennis elite spread out over the many courts of the Caja Magica complex, allowing spectators to see the likes of Maria Sharapova, the Williams sisters, Petra Kvitova, Simona Halep and many more, all in one day.

Opening the day on center court was Maria Sharapova, who was looking to rebound from her first-round loss in Stuttgart less than two weeks ago. The reigning Madrid champion came through in style, getting past Timea Bacsinszky in straight sets to clinch her first clay win of the season.

While it was all smooth sailing for Sharapova, fellow Madrid 2014 finalist Simona Halep had a day to forget in Madrid, making a first-round exit after losing to Alize Cornet in straight sets. The world #2 wasn’t the only well-known player to fall on Sunday, as Eugenie Bouchard suffered yet another first-round loss in what has become a nightmarish season for the young Canadian, losing her match to Barbora Strycova despite winning the first set.

Meanwhile, Petra Kvitova was able to rebound from her unfortunate first-round loss in Stuttgart, besting Olga Govortsova in three sets, joining Caroline Wozniacki & Serena Williams in the second round of the tournament.

The evening match inside Caja Magica featured tennis legend Venus Williams & Victoria Azarenka. The Belarusian former world #1 is still on her quest to make it back up the rankings following several injuries that have plagued the two-time slam champion for more than two years now.

Azarenka seems to be getting into proper form, clinching a two-set win over Venus to set up a second-round clash with Ajla Tomljanovic. The Croatia-born Australian was another surprise winner on Sunday, blowing WTA rising star Belinda Bencic off the court in straight sets.

The 2015 Mutua Madrid Open will continue to pick up steam on Monday as the first half of the tournament’s second round is due tomorrow, featuring Serena Williams, Caroline Wozniacki and many others, so keep checking back for all the latest action from the Spanish capital!

Nonetheless, it’s great to see Simona ranked #2! She so deserves that spot. She can only get better and better. “Go, Simona!”
