Spain’s former world No.19 Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, winner of five WTA titles in singles and 16 in doubles, is joining Tatjana Maria, Kateryina Bondarenko and Evgeniya Rodina as a mom on the WTA tour making her way back. The 32-year-old, who got married in July 2012 in Barcelona and subsequently gave birth to a baby girl Andrea, returned to competitive tennis at the Miami Open, playing doubles with Vera Dushevina. The pair lost in the quarterfinals, but the working mom can now happily celebrate her return to the doubles rankings, spot No.259. She’s still unranked in singles.

Martinez Sanchez tweeted her daughter’s pic and this doubles ranking snapshot, saying:

Después de mi primer torneo jugado, vuelvo a tener ranking!

  1. We had quite a long time on tour without players who had given birth. Now it’s refreshing to see so many moms coming back.

  2. This year we have a lot of comebacks. I’m just happy that these players are playing well again especially Nicole Vaidisova who I heard will play Marrakech instead of her home tournament Prague.
