Three of the 2014 Generali Ladies Linz top seeds started their quest for this year’s title today and only one of them managed to reach the tournament’s second round after an exciting day of tennis inside the Tips Arena.

The first of the top seeded players to start on Wednesday was Dominika Cibulkova, the Australian Open finalist faced off with German qualifier Anna-Lena Friedsam and after three hotly-contested sets of tennis, the young German prevailed, continuing the struggle for the top seeds in Linz.

The next upset was just waiting around the corner as Sabine Lisicki failed to win her first-round match against Karin Knapp. After the Italian took the first set, Lisicki rallied back to force a decider that climaxed in a tiebreak in Knapp’s favor.

Following Ivanovic’s withdrawal and the early losses of Petkovic, Lisicki & Cibulkova, the tournament is slowly but steadily running out of star players in the competition. Thankfully, Eugenie Bouchard lived up to the expectations as the top seed breezed by Austrian’s Patricia Mayr-Achleitner in two quick sets.
