The busy Asian swing is continuing with the China Open and Serena Williams followed her last week’s disappointing retirement from the Wuhan Open with a 7-5 6-2 victory over Silvia Soler-Espinosa in the first round of the $5,427,105 tournament in Beijing.

The top-seeded Williams needed quite some time to warm up, almost suffering a bagel in the first set. The defending champion was three breaks down after 15 minutes of the match, 5-0 40-15, but then she won 13 of the next 15 games to make safe progress.

Next up for Williams is qualifier Tsvetana Pironkova, who advanced with a 6-4 6-1 victory over Maria Kirilenko. (photo: Jimmie48)

  1. Serena has some problems that we didn’t see in the past. She is losing quickly to players that she shouldn’t do so she and her coach have to find the solution to avoid these mistakes.
