Nicole_VaidisovaRemember when two months ago I told you that Nicole Vaidisova was going to make a comeback? The once unbelievable development has actualized now and the Czech’s start is a winning one, as she defeated Sesil Karatantcheva 6-3 6-4 in the first round of an ITF Women’s Circuit event in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The 25-year-old Vaidisova was in tears after the victory and called it surreal and nerve-wracking. She hadn’t played for almost four and a half years, which included a marriage and divorce to fellow tennis pro Radek Stepanek and multiple shoulder surgeries. Only these past months has she been able to serve without much pain and in her comeback match she held nine of her 10 service games.

Here are a few words Vaidisova posted on Instagram about what the return means to her:

This time last year I was recovering from my second shoulder surgery and going through a very personal heartbreak. I will be forever grateful for the unwavering support of my amazing family, friends and medical team to get me where I am now. I don’t know how this will play out, but no matter the outcome, I know I will be proud of myself for giving it my all and for the person I have become through all this.

Will the still young Vaidisova manage to crawl back to the tennis heights and finally realize her potential that was prematurely obstructed? Will the former world No.7 and two-time Grand Slam semifinalist manage to grow her list of six WTA titles and go even further in majors? (photo: Alexisrael)

  1. she looks bit rusty tennis wise ( first match since 2010) but she looks really fit 😀 and she’s wearing reebok but not sure if she’s wearing already used one or it’s their new collection. So hopefully she’ll return to main circuit by next year

  2. Relationships are hard – you can have a big support and play your best tennis or it can cause a major breakdown in your performance. There is not a magic solution, you have to try and see. We are glad that she is back and for sure there is more good tennis in front of her

  3. But she’s continuing her comeback, now she has been awarded a wildcard into the Red Rock Pro Open taking place next week at the Red Rock Country Club in Summerlin.
