First it was Agnieszka Radwanska, then Ana Ivanovic, and today in the third round of the US Open we lost second seed Simona Halep, sixth seed Angelique Kerber and seed No.19 Venus Williams quite simultaneously, one on Grandstand, one on Court 17 and one on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Seeds No. 2, 4, 6, 8 all out!

Halep led her opponent, 121st-ranked Mirjana Lucic-Baroni of Croatia, 5-2 before allowing her to completely neutralize the deficit and eventually win in straight sets 7-6(6) 6-2, with the Romanian winning just three games since that initial advantage.

Venus was bageled by seed No.13 Sara Errani in the first set, then produced a bagel of her own in the second set and then the third set was decided in a tiebreak. How weird is that? Errani recorded her first victory over Venus in their four meetings, taking the match 6-0 0-6 7-6(5). Venus actually hasn’t reached the second week at a major since Wimbledon 2011.

Kerber fell to 17-year-old Belinda Bencic 6-1 7-5, who has now made her first career Grand Slam fourth round. (photo: Jimmie48)

  1. -_-‘ Great now it’s complete. i am scared now for caroline for 3 reasons

    1. she’s playing maria
    2. she’s 3rd on my fav’s to win 🙁
    3. she’s seeded 2*5 😉

  2. Scared because she’s playing Maria? Huh? She stumped her, just as I knew she could and would. “Happy for you, Caroline, but my girl, Serena, is going to hold up that ’14 US Open trophy for the third year in a row and get that bonus million, as well. Oh, yeah…and get her 18th major title, too.”Go, Serena! You’re doing a great job, so keep it up!”
