Rogers Cup Favorites Advance on Wednesday

Following yesterday's spectacular exit of crowd-favorite Genie Bouchard, the 2014 Rogers Cup resumed more predictable on Wednesday as all of the tournament's top-seeded players successfully completed their first matches on Canadian soil.

The first top player to start her Rogers Cup 2014 title bid was Maria Sharapova, facing off with Garbine Muguruza. Despite the Spaniard winning the first set, Sharapova took firm control of the match in the latter stages, living up to her role as one of the top favorites to take home the Rogers Cup trophy.

Next up was Serena Williams, the 2013 Rogers Cup champion met Sam Stosur in a rematch of the 2011 US Open final. Unlike three years ago, the Australian had nothing to answer Serena with today as the American closed out the match in two quick sets.

Afterwards, Serena impressed everyone with an on-court interview in fluent French, much to the delight of the Franco-Canadian crowd.

The final top player to enter Uniprix Stadium on a long day of tennis was Petra Kvitova. Much like Genie Bouchard, the two-time Wimbledon champion played her first match after the big final on the British lawn. Unlike the Canadian, Kvitova lived up to the expectations people set in a slam finalist, storming past Australian Casey Dellacqua, following a short rain delay early in the first set.

The 2014 Rogers Cup will continue on Thursday as all big-name players will be in action during the tournament's third round. Women's Tennis Blog will be there to cover it all for you so keep checking back for more from Montreal!

Great pictures once again! I'm just wondering if you could take some pictures from the Caro-Shelby match first up on Court Banque Nationale today? Thanks! :-)

Hahaha look at Sharapova's face in this fistpump photo! :) I also love the photo of Cibulkova with her hair flying.
