Simona Halep and Eugenie Bouchard joined Czechs Lucie Safarova and Petra Kvitova in the semifinals of Wimbledon 2014.
The highest seed left in the draw, No.3 Simona Halep, dropped her first serve of the match and soon found herself trailing 4-1 to seed No.19 and last year’s finalist Sabine Lisicki, who showed no signs of her yesterday’s shoulder injury. After managing to break back and level to 4-4, the Romanian raced to win the first set and actually continued the momentum in the second to claim the entire match on Center Court, 6-4 6-0. Eleven games in a row!
Meanwhile on Court No.1, in the quarterfinal between seed No.13 Eugenie Bouchard and ninth seed Angelique Kerber, things went with serve until 3-3 when Bouchard produced a massive hold by saving four break points and followed it up with a break before serving out, 6-3. In the second set Bouchard grabbed two breaks, one in the third and one in the fifth game, and even through Kerber recovered one, she couldn’t recover both and ended up losing to the Canadian 6-3 6-4. Bouchard is now in her third straight Grand Slam semifinal and after Wimbledon she will make a Top 10 debut, equalling best WTA ranking by a Canadian. (photos: Jimmie48)
both the semi-final matches are repeats of 3-setters from earlier this year. Hopefully they will go distance again in the semis 🙂 Any of these 4 women wiinning this slam would be making 4 different great stories 😀
Players tend to hide their injuries. My guess is Lisicki’s shoulder started to act up after the 5th game. This comment takes nothing away from Simona who is has had a great 12 months of tennis!!
