Kvitova stops Zahlavova Strycova in Wimbledon quarterfinals

Petra Kvitova

In an all-Czech Wimbledon quarterfinal, sixth seed Petra Kvitova raced through the first set and then fought off the challenge of Barbora Zahlavova Strycova in the second set to make the semifinals of Wimbledon.

The 2011 champion Kvitova started the match by breaking her opponent's serve and then repeated that in the fifth game to lead 4-1 and again two games later to close the set. In the second set, Zahlavova Strycova found her rhythm and won the sixth and the seventh games of the set to love to lead 4-3 with a break up. But after a long eighth game, Kvitova managed to break back for 4-all and even though Zahlavova Strycova broke back right away, she wasn't strong enough to serve out the set and the rest of the match was Kvitova's. Final score: 6-1 7-5.

After playing her compatriot in the quarterfinals, Kvitova will face another Czech in the semifinals, as seed No.23 Lucie Safarova became the first member of the final four with a 6-3 6-1 victory over Ekaterina Makarova.

Earlier today we also had three fourth-round matches. First third seed Simona Halep made easy progress against Zarina Diyas and then seed No.19 Sabine Lisicki set up a quarterfinal with her by working her way past Yaroslava Shvedova in quite a dramatic encounter. Afterwards, fifth seed Maria Sharapova exited the tournament at the hands of ninth seed Angelique Kerber, 7-6(4) 4-6 6-4. (photo: Moo's Tennis Blog)

It was disappointing both women's quarter-final didn't have bigger crowds today. Kvitova v BZS was a fun match. I'm so happy that Lucie won! This draw is wide open, but in a good way because all the players left are both players I like and who are very respectable. Right now, Petra is the favourite for me.

James, it would've been good if BZS challenged Kvitova a bit more, but the second set was a good one, especially when BZS broke Kvitova again to lead 5-4 and serve for the set.

Zahlavova is fail to show her good performance inthis match. you can't belive that this player beat two top ranked players in her some last matches. it was totally one sided match .
