Ten years after winning her first Grand Slam at Wimbledon, fifth-seeded Maria Sharapova started her 2014 campaign at the tournament with a dominant 6-1 6-0 victory over British world No.247 Samantha Murray, while top seed Serena Williams needed just three minutes more than Sharapova to advance to the second round with a 6-1 6-2 win over her new fellow American Anna Tatishvili.

Sharapova converted all five of her five break points and saved all the three that her opponent earned, while Williams also didn’t let her opponent convert a single break point, while she used up four of her eight. The mighty Williams also made her mark in aces, hitting 16 to her opponent’s zero.

Last year’s runner-up Sabine Lisicki progressed, as did the 2012 finalist Agnieszka Radwanska, with victories over Julia Glushko 6-2 6-1 and Andreea Mitu 6-2 6-1, respectively. Seed No.13 Eugenie Bouchard eliminated Daniela Hantuchova 7-5 7-5, while seventh-seeded Jelena Jankovic fell to Kaia Kanepi 6-3 6-2, 14th-seeded Sara Errani fell to Caroline Garcia 2-6 7-6(3) 7-5 and seed No.28 Svetlana Kuznetsova lost to Michelle Larcher De Brito 2-6 6-3 6-1. Caroline Wozniacki, seeded 16th, finished her yesterday’s match with Shahar Peer, winning four straight games to win 6-3 6-0.

  1. No big upsets yet! Jankovic was a minor shock considering Kanepi’s recent form, but JJ and grass just doesn’t seem to work. There are going to be so many fantastic women’s matches for Thursday!

  2. Yeah, this year Wimbledon wasn’t to bad for first round of play top 20 WTA/ATP players. Sure there were some who went out but nothing one would call shocking. I think more excitement might happen during third round of play. When tougher seed play better players.
