The 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic completed the third-round line-up at this year’s edition of the claycourt Grand Slam, breaking the resistance of Elina Svitolina in 71 minutes.

The players hardly managed to hold their serves in the first set, which featured a total of seven breaks, but Ivanovic hung in there against the 2010 Roland Garros junior champion Svitolina, and after breaking the 33rd-ranked Ukrainian to level at 4-4, two holds followed, and then Ivanovic didn’t let another service game slip away and proceeded to win a break in the following game, converting a set point with a lovely forehand on the line. In the second set Ivanovic raced to a 4-1 lead and the rest is history, 7-5 6-2.

Another former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, seeded 27th, also moved into the third round today, with a 7-6(5) 6-3 victory over Camila Giorgi, sixth seed Jelena Jankovic won the last eight games of her encounter with Kurumi Nara and triumphed 7-5 6-0, seed No.15 Sloane Stephens beat Polona Hercog 6-1 6-3, fourth seed Simona Halep took out Heather Watson 6-2 6-4, fifth seed Petra Kvitova defeated Marina Erakovic 6-4 6-4, while Kristina Mladenovic, who had made the first surprise of the tournament by upsetting Li Na, continued to progress through the draw with a 7-6(5) 3-6 6-3 win over Alison Riske.
