Tuesday at the 2014 Nürnberger Versicherungscup finally saw the #1 seed in action as Angelique Kerber played her first match against Marina Erakovic.

The spectators came in masses to see Germany’s most successful WTA player and Kerber did not disappoint, getting past Erakovic in straight sets, a pleasing result following some difficult weeks in which the 26 year-old suffered from back problems.

Perhaps even more impressive than Kerber’s performance was Eugenie Bouchard‘s second match in Nürnberg. The popular young Canadian swept past Anastasia Rodionova in record time, allowing the Australian just one single game and little time for her trademark antics.

Bouchard is looking to be the tournament favorite so far, having spent just 90 minutes on court so far on her way into the Nürnberger Versicherungscup quarterfinals .

The fans in Nürnberg did not just get to see some quality tennis today, they also got to witness something rather unique. Following Karolina Pliskova‘s win over Alison van Uytvanck, a lucky fan got the chance to race the young Czech on a Bobby-Car across center court.

Action in Nürnberg will continue tomorrow with two all-German duels as Angelique Kerber plays Anna-Lena Friedsam (who successfully made it into the Roland Garros main draw thanks to Vika Azararenka’s withdrawal) while Mona Barthel will fight for her quarterfinal spot against Annika Beck.

  1. Nice portraits of Barthel. I saw her photos from the Shakespeare-themed player party, she looked stunning. Haha and Pliskova’s race! It’s nice to have a tournament insider to show us all the things we can’t see in regular coverage by big media companies.
