Tuesday featured plenty of exciting tennis action at the Caja Magica as the second round of the 2014 Mutua Madrid Open kicked off, giving fans more than 13 hours of quality tennis to enjoy.

One of the day’s themes were almost-upsets as several WTA top players were on the verge of making an early departure from the Spanish capital.

Among them was crowd favorite Maria Sharapova, the recently-crowned Stuttgart triple champion started her match against American Christina McHale in a routine fashion, only to find her herself trailing in the third set all of a sudden.

In the end, Sharapova’s trademark mental strength prevailed as she turned the match around. Another American that was giving a top player some headaches was Varvara Lepchenko who took a set off Petra Kvitova. The former Wimbledon champ regrouped after a short toilet break, fighting her way back in the second set, finally taking the third set by storm.

Other top players had less problems as Li Na enjoyed a swift win over fellow Chinese Jie Zheng while Sara Errani managed to decide the Italian battle against Francesca Schiavone in her favor.

The end of the day was marked by another match between countrywomen as Serbians Ana Ivanovic & Bojana Jovanovski had the honor to host the last match on center court.

Following a lengthy ATP match, the final women’s match of the day didn’t get underway before 11 pm in the evening as it was already Wednesday morning when Ana Ivanovic wrapped up Tuesday’s play by winning match point.

Second round action in Madrid will continue on Thursday as world #1 Serena Williams is due to play her second 2014 Mutua Madrid Open Match alongside plenty of other matches, all of which Women’s Tennis Blog will cover up close for you!

  1. Jacob, these posts are highlights from my photographer who is also posting updates live from the event on Twitter. Today I will take charge and write in my style, which you are used to.

  2. Jacob, I didn’t think your comment was negative, I just explained the situation. I think Jimmie48 has been doing an excellent job with his photos and highlights.
