Petra KvitovaToday was the day for the second-round action at the Qatar Total Open in Doha and here are some highlights from the 16 singles matches played.

Wearing a printed zipper jacket and a matching headband paired with black leggings from her EleVen brand, Venus Williams was on the verge of victory over third seed Petra Kvitova, having points for a 5-1 lead in the third set and a match point in the deciding tiebreak, but eventually the Czech won 6-2 2-6 7-6(7).

Playing her first match since the Australian Open triumph, top seed Li Na raced to a 5-0 lead against Magdalena Rybarikova, winning 20 of the first 25 points of the match, but it was not that easy until the end and after putting the loss of the second set behind her, Li, who will regardless of the outcome in Doha rise to a career-high of No.2 on Monday, went through with a 6-1 5-7 6-2 win.

Second seed Agnieszka Radwanska closed it out against Sorana Cirstea by taking the last nine games of the match, 7-5 6-0. Seeds Angelique Kerber, Sara Errani, Simona Halep and Jelena Jankovic also advanced, while Ana Ivanovic, Caroline Wozniacki and Samantha Stosur added their names to the upsets list. The ninth-seeded Ivanovic fell to Klara Zakopalova 4-6 6-1 6-3, the eighth-seeded Wozniacki handed Yanina Wickmayer a victory for the first time in their seven career meetings, 6-4 7-5, while seed No.12 Stosur lost to Jana Cepelova 6-4 4-6 6-1.

Comeback player and wildcard Alisa Kleybanova, who yesterday advanced halfway through her match against Dominika Cibulkova, today confirmed that she can win when her opponent doesn’t retire and dispatched Stefanie Voegele 6-3 6-2. (photo: Moo’s Tennis Blog)

  1. Des Platt, we’re still very early into the season, but it’s worth noting that Wozniacki is only 46th in the Road to Singapure, while Stosur is 30th.
