Debuting her Nike Premier Tunic Dress, Maria Sharapova advanced to the second round of the Australian Open with a 6-3 6-4 victory over always-colorfully-dressed Bethanie Mattek Sands.
The third-seeded Sharapova made nine double faults and 28 unforced errors, while her percentage of first serves was just 53. From an initial 4-0 lead, Sharapova gave Mattek Sands a chance to break back and approach her with two straight games won, but Sharapova kept the lead and took the set.
At 4-4 in the second set Sharapova earned a crucial break on her opponent's double fault and soon wrapped up victory in the late but still hot match. (photos via Australian Open)
