Not that we expected anything less, world No.1 Serena Williams simply continued her extraordinary results from the last season and defended her Brisbane International title by beating world No.2 and the 2009 Brisbane champion Victoria Azarenka 6-4 7-5 in the final.

After a first-round bye, Williams took out Andrea Petkovic, then ninth seed Dominika Cibulkova in the quarterfinals, third seed Maria Sharapova in the semis and in the title match the American converted the only break point of the first set and had 14 winners to Azarenka’s three, while in the more streaky second set she recovered from a 4-2 deficit and in the crucial 11th game she hit a powerful backhand down the line to secure her third break of the set and soon the victory, her 58th career title. (photo: © Neal Trousdale)
