Tennis fashion of Bethanie Mattek Sands, a daring mix of everything: extravagant clothes, colorful hair, tattoos, and what not

Even if you don't know Bethanie Mattek Sands, the moment you see her current profile picture on the WTA's official website you realize you're not dealing with an average player when it comes to style. If you happened to have come across my article "Bethanie Mattek Sands and her memorable outfits" you got quite a comprehensive idea of how far in extravagance the American can go, but let's see what she brought to the table in 2013.

It's practically impossible to trace all the clothing combinations that Bethanie mixed and matched during the tennis season behind us, since she is not like most of the other players who wear one outfit for an entire tournament or several tournaments in a row, but often changes her outfits from match to match. However, the overview below will give you a very good idea of what the experimental American was about in 2013 regarding fashion.

Knee-high socks have been the signature of Bethanie's tennis wardrobe for years and this season they were a must, present at all Bethanie's on-court appearances.

As you can notice, in 2013 Bethanie didn't opt for a dress once. All her outfits included separates and not always perfectly matched ones! However, we can also say that this year was relatively calm in Bethanie's fashion life, especially when we remember her ball jacket from Wimbledon 2011, her memorable yellow tennis ball dress from the Pre-Wimbledon party the same year, and her provocative clothing for US Open 2007 which even distracted a ball boy.

The 28-year-old Bethanie is everything but subdued. She likes excessive details, unusual designs, prints, materials and combinations, on top of numerous accessories.

However, she doesn't accessorize in a usual way – just with headbands, wristbands, caps, jewelry or nail polish.

Bethanie dyes her hair in yellow, blue, green and who knows what else, all at the same time! At that's not all, her haircut includes a side shave.

By the way, this year Venus Williams, whose fashion Bethanie admires, also introduced colorful hair to the tennis courts with her purple braids at the US Open.

At the all-white Wimbledon, already at the pre-tournament party Bethanie started pushing the boundaries, wearing an elegant white dress with screaming accessories: a yellow belt and colorful hair! During play she partially covered her crazy hairstyle with a cap. At the US Open she had purple hair.

Another significant accessory in Bethanie's look are her tattoos, primarily the flowers on her arm. Here's what Bethanie said about the tattoo in an interview for Women's Tennis Blog back in 2010:

The flowers on my bicep are water lilies and along with being one of my favorite flowers it means enlightenment and change, so its kind of my own personal zen garden.

Although I am not a fan of Bethanie's style, I am grateful that we have such a fashion experimentalist at the WTA Tour, someone who is definitely unique, enjoys taking fashion risks and brave enough to stand out with extravagant style. I did really like one of her outfits, though – it was for the 2011 US Open when she wore red shoes and tube socks in the colors of the American flag.

What's your opinion? Do you appreciate what Bethanie brings to the tennis fashion table?
