Almost daily our WTA stars are photographed during their matches and off-court appearances, but we rarely get to see how they looked when they were just awakening their interest for the sport. Luckily, Women’s Tennis Blog has a section dedicated to the photos of women’s tennis players when they were children and already about 50 players have been included. Can you recognize our latest featured player? It’s little Italian Francesca Schiavone.
The cute kid in blue knit ensemble and knee-high socks grew up to win a Grand Slam title at Roland Garros 2010, giving her country the first women’s singles title at the tournament. In addition, Schiavone, now 33 years old, has won five WTA events in singles (Marrakech, Strasbourg, Barcelona, Moscow and Bad Gastein) and played the finals of Roland Garros the year after she won the trophy at the prestigious event. Moreover, she claimed seven doubles titles and went as high as No.4 in the rankings, establishing a new Italian ranking record for women. And that’s not all, Schiavone was a member of the Fed Cup team on all the three occasions when Italy won the trophy, in 2006, 2009 and 2010.
Earlier we featured Schiavone’s fellow Italians in the kiddie pics section – adorable curly Sara Errani and romantic Flavia Pennetta in a while dress – while you can see our full WTA childhood gallery here. (photo via ITF Tennis)
