In the beginning of the first set, Serena and Vika exchanged breaks but they held their serves until 5-all when Serena broke for 6-5 and then served the set out 7-5 in 58 minutes. In the second set, Serena went a double break up, but the second-seeded Azarenka managed to level the score to 5-5. The set lasted for 70 long minutes in which the two best players in the world fought with all their assets and it ended with a tiebreak which Azarenka won 7-6(6) when Serena sent a backhand long. The third set began just like the second with two breaks for Serena 4-1 and when it seemed that Azarenka could manage to push trough and even the score like in the second set, she just froze. She tried and gave her all, but couldn’t do anything, Serena closed the set in only 37 minutes, 6-1.

The victory puts Serena on the second place in the number of US Open titles, where she is tied with Steffi Graf, while top position is occupied by Chris Evert, who won six. Serena’s payout today, $3,6 million, is the biggest in the history of professional tennis.
