Fifth seed Sara Errani was among the first players to take the court on the opening day of Wimbledon 2013 and in one hour and 12 minutes her singles competition at the Grand Slam was over, at the hands of world No.65 teenager Monica Puig who is playing a grasscourt tournament for the first time in her career.

The Puerto Rican needed nothing more than one break point to take the first set, while in the second she converted three of her seven break chances and made the upset on the seventh match point. Puig finished the encounter with 38 winners to Errani’s mere 13, and 17 unforced errors to Errani’s 15. Final score: 6-3 6-2.

The world No.5 Errani played the semifinals of the French Open earlier this month, but withdrew from the subsequent Eastbourne with a right adductor strain.

Shortly before Errani lost, Ana Ivanovic beat Virginie Razzano after winning the first set 7-6(1) and then bageling the Frenchwoman in the second. (photo: sr_cranks)

  1. Somehow I’m not surprised that Errani lost. She is pretty poor grass court player.

P.S I believe that you, Marija, meant that Razzano is French, not Italian.
