After double injury-marred 2012 and missing the first two months of the 2013 action, Andrea Petkovic has slowly climbed the rankings in recent months and has now reached the final of the Nurnberger Versicherungscup by defeating top seed Jelena Jankovic 6-4 6-3, the player who reached the semis with just 12 games lost. Petkovic has now won nine straight matches, including the five she won last week en route to an ITF title in Marseille.

At the new WTA stop, the players’ last chance to play on clay before the action shifts entirely to grass, after beating Sofia Arvidsson in the first round, the current world No.103 Petkovic worked her way past two fellow Germans and seeded players No.4 Julia Goerges and No.8 Annika Beck, before bumping into Jankovic and taking her out in straight sets.

In Saturday’s final, Petkovic will play seventh-seeded Simona Halep, who beat fifth-seeded Lucie Safarova 6-3 0-6 6-2. (photo: Ralf Reinecke)
