WTA players have no idea who Top 5 in the rankings are!

This is hilarious! WTA players have no clear idea about who the Top 5 players in the rankings are, and to make things worse, not even world No.3 Agnieszka Radwanska knows who is ranked just below her! :) They are all pretty good with the Top 3, but the Top 5, hmmm, too difficult. Interestingly, they all think that Li Na is in the Top 5.

Elena Bovina guesses that Jelena Jankovic is No.5, and she's fallen out of the Top 20!

Petra Kvitova is not even remotely on Nadia Petrova's mind!

Sania Mirza and Bethanie Mattek Sands were not much better even teamed up.

Here's how the current WTA Top 5 looks:

1. Victoria Azarenka
2. Maria Sharapova
3. Agnieszka Radwanska
4. Petra Kvitova
5. Serena Williams

I'd say this puts things in wonderful perspective by shedding more light on, amongst other things, the formal vs. perceived ranking – and, then, by the players themselves, who must know better than us, subjective fans and/or pastimers. To begin with, it is quite impossible for them not to know who the current No.1, No.2, and, perhaps, No.3 are – but beyond that they aren't sure and so seem to go, more or less, with their own gut-felt estimation of their high-ranked colleagues' games. Oh, well, I may be wrong because their choices (Li Na, Sam Stosur, before Kvitova, etc.) happen to reflect mine own – but… Nutritious thought-food, isn't it.

That also only confirms how for example Serena is always considered a threat. The actual ranking of a player has little to do with how much their opponent would be intimidated by them, it's what the opponent perceives that counts. And as we can see, the perception and the actual ranking are not really in sync.

But it really is funny, I mean Top 5, it's not that they were asked to name the Top 20. One would think that if someone knew it would be the WTA players, but apparently they don't pay much attention to that.

Bovina gets the prize for the worst answer. The last time Jankovic was in the top 10 was probably the last time Bovina made the main draw at a Grandslam.

Picking Stosur over Serena isn't that bad a miss as Serena has only been #5 for a few weeks and Stosur will move back to #5 after Roland Garros. Of course, Aga's sister played Kvitova in the 2nd round, but this was before that, and she always ends up in Azarenka's section of the draw herself. I think it reflects more on Kvitova's poor results since the Australian Open than anything else.

I agree, Kvitova has not won any tournaments this year unlike top 3. I think people did not guess Serena because she is most people´s tip for no.1

What's weird about it to me is that I would have thought they would have some awareness of the seedings, which of course directly follow the ratings

Berserker, yeah, if Bovina's answer was a groundstroke, it would be the one ending up in the audience!
