Williams sisters don't deserve the privileged status they have in women's tennis

Our regular contributor John Bolan, irritated by the behavior of Serena and Venus Williams who, he believes, are disrespecting the WTA Tour and the other players who work hard all-year long, is sharing his opinion with us. Read on!

For the last several years I have been following the antics of the Williams sisters. I have seen the broken agreements between them and various tournaments. I have been there when tournaments marketed them only to have them pull out at the last minute.  The fake injuries and the appearance fees taken to show up but they play only one match losing to a no body. All this stuff is well documented. It is too crazy to make up.

Last week the Williams sisters actually showed up for a couple of matches at Eastbourne before bowing out so they can model their newest togs in London. The tennis media went bonkers about them while forgetting all about the women who now lead the WTA and where tennis priorities should be. These two players make a mockery of the tennis world and the media but it seems people keep falling for their antics.

Wimbledon got into the act by awarding both Venus and Serena higher seeds than they have earned and assuring that they are in different halves of the draw so that there could theoretically be an all Williams final. This is an insult to the women who play week in and week out and actually do their part to promote women’s tennis unlike Serena and Venus.

It didn’t hurt for them to be seeded like this, one might think? Just ask what Sara Errani thinks about losing her place as a seed. She had to play the seeded, Kaia Kanepi, in the first round instead of an easy opponent. Sara worked hard all year for her seed and Wimbledon failed her, but she focused her anger and upset Kanepi.

The next question is if they seeded the Williams, then why didn’t they seed Sabine Lisicki? Sabine was also injured and has actually proved she is back with her win in Birmingham last week.  She has to play Li Na in the second round. Unfair!!

The media writers have forgotten about the best players on the tour – Caroline Wozniacki, Maria Sharapova, Vera Zvonareva and Viki Azarenka. Certainly the best are not as stated in the Women’s Tennis Blog – Serena, Venus and Kim. Serena and Venus are not really interested in the tour, and Kim is actually injured. They should do what Elena Dementieva did last year and gracefully retire.

What do you think of John's viewpoint? He is aware that not everyone will agree with him, but he's prepared to defend his position. :)

No doubt this is a provacative opinion that rubs all of us Williams sisters fans the wrong way,as well as their detractors. The seedings go not only according to ranking, but admittedly are also subjective. I rhink the higher seeding is appropriate. It makes no sense for them to play the top seeds and essentially have the equivalent of the quarters and the semis in the first week! I began this comment before I read those that precede me. This may be the last comment I ever post. I don't like to hang out in bad company that don't seem to know how to hang out with good company, whether they agree with other opinions or not.

The WTA has done some things that have been detrimental to many players including Maria Sharapova and the Williams sisters. In 2008, an irritated Sharapova posted the real inside story on the underhanded tactics used by the WTA on her website.

“As many of you know, the WTA tour makes many players enter tournaments that they know the players will not be playing,”

“I informed the WTA several months ago that if I played Charleston, I would have to pull out of Berlin. Now they are forcing me to give an injury for the reason why I am pulling out or they will give me an additional fine on top of the 125,000 fine already given to me. I am a very giving person, but I refuse to give anymore of my money to the WTA tour.”

It was about time for someone of Maria Sharapova's stature had the courage to finally speak out about some of the Tour’s unfair tournament entry policies.

The WTA player entry clauses have long caused problems as players have been forced to enter tournaments (and later withdraw), even though they never had any intention of competing in the first place.

What happens is the greedy tournaments sell extra tickets from the inclusion of marquee players on their rosters, the Tour makes more money by “committing” headlining stars, and leaves the public's indignation on the players once they officially withdraw days before the event.

Also Maria revealed some of the unreasonable WTA marketing tactics:

“I want all my fans to know that the WTA Tour is forcing me and several of the other top players to do a 4 hour commercial shoot for WTA Tour marketing materials,”

“They want me to do this shoot on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday of the Rome tournament after flying 12 hours from LA. I have set my own personal rules when is comes to doing shoots and I never do shoots before tournaments because they are mentally draining and I want to just focus on my tennis. Now the WTA is telling me if I don’t do this shoot they will fine me over $300,000. As you can see the WTA Tour loves to fine players. To be honest, I would love to do this and help promote the tour as much as possible, but to force me to do this shoot the day before a tier 1 tournament is just not right."

helen! Wta is a disaster! Caroline has more weeks in n1 spot than sharapova! That explains it all hahah

  4. Marine

Lulinqua, you dont need to lecture me about how to behave. It is Brenda who has behaved like an immature brat here. She called several people stupid and put down their views when they had different opinion from hers.

  5. Geuzin

blah blah blaah! shame on u john, trying to take the sisters down u ass. keep ur opinion to urself and under ur stinky pants. Let me tell u something. What u think it's true, does not necessarily mean it's true. It just means "u" think its true. You can believe a lie and make it a truth for yourself. So basically what I'm trying to say is 'Fuck off'

And to the one calling me a troll : I'm not political correct : I'm very sorry for you ! And about my banishmnent on at least 2 of them were pure ABUSE of power ! Some of the moderators and even administrators there are incompetent, biased, are on with friendship politic, some of them got their moderator status with licking the arse of the admins and unfortunately it worked for them ! I'm not jealous, stop going with that stupid card which means you ain't that clever that you want make people believe you are.

The Williams Sisters think they are the center of the world and are completely OUT of touch about the reality of their own country The USA : A country where unemployment is reaching levels never seen before, Police State everwhere, The Dollar printed by the Criminals of the Federal Reserve is a FIAT currency, You have more and more poor people but hey they don't give a dam about it ! Not to forget the Criminal Banksters that are Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan, Wall Street ! And to end all of this : The destruction by design of the USA by ploutocrats and dumbing down of the society by the vaccines, food full of dangerous neurotoxins, poison in tap water, Not only this in the US administrations, you have psychopath wanting population reduction by forced sterilisation, abortion and many more evilish things : That's the truth of the USA ! Enslavement of the US population by debts created by the banksters ! But not only in the US, you have also that in Europe, Canada and other parts in the world.

Loads of tennis players have no knowledge about the state of our world run by oligarch malthusians that hates Humanity.

And I won't bow down like all the journalists are doing with the WS : with acting like that they have a huge lack of respect towards all the other players on tour ! They don't deserve special status ! End off !

Thanks god, someone who has balls and who is not afraid to tell the truth about the Williams, the media and the WTA. They have been running the show for quite a few years now and it always slipped, and they always get the creme of the creme when they decide to show somewhere. I am in Montreal and neither of them ever played here. But still the Williams keep registering to the tournament and what you know, at the beginning of August when the tournament start, they cancelled. The people who are responsible of this event still invest a lot of money to promote them, instead of promoting players are are coming every years and that almost nobody knows because the tournament organizer and the WTA do not make what is required to promote these players.
What is really sad is that when the Williams are cancelling, the media pick it up and they say that the tournament lost their best player so the show will not be as good.
It is already very difficult to see women's tennis matches on TV, so when these 2 are behaving like that, they are alimenting the media to downgrade women tennis and presenting their matches. What enrage me even more, is the fact that the media will almost only present the Williams sisters matches when they are at a tournament, not the other WTA players matches… What kind of message is this sending to the WTA players.. they are second class players, not good enough to be on center court and be on TV….
I love tennis and I admire the hard work all these women are putting in their work. But the Williams sisters, the Sports media and the WTA suck for behaving like that.

Thanks a lot John to states these facts so clearly :-)

  8. Rabbit

John Bolan is right on here! He is indeed brave to express his opinion. The Williams sisters are merely using tennis to enrich themselves their family, and friends, and because they are attention junkies. They have no respect for tennis traditions.

If they both quit tennis altogether the world would be a better place. Bring back Althea Gibson, Chanda Rubin, Alexandra Stevenson, and Lori McNeil, players with grace who don't rely on intimidation and power solely. The WTA has caved in to the Williams sisters, and so has Wimbledon. What a shame.

  9. Diane

I think that, between them, Venus and Serena hold 20 major singles titles, 12 major doubles titles, 4 major mixed doubles titles, and 5 Olympic gold medals.

    Enough said.

  10. brenda

marija i respect you and for me your blog is awesome! But bolan and people like marine dON't know ANYTHING About tennis and about sports! I don't understand why you accept this article on your blog! Is ridiculous! Bolan's article about wta awards sucks like this! But this is offensive for everyone who understands about tennis!
    Think about it!
I'm not a williams sister's fan..and i'm not a women tennis fan! I started watching it since 2009! I love men's tennis..and because of that i love BIG champions like nadal! And williams sisters are nadals in women tennis!

  11. JohnnyB

Thanks for all the comments! And thank you Marija for publishing my article; an article that you may not agree with.
Jeanne added another tournament to the long list of WTA tournaments who have received assurances that the Williams would show only to have them cancel at the last minute after spending money to support them. San Diego was their victim for several years in a row. Serena was seen surfing in Hawaii instead of playing tennis in San Diego. She admitted playing in a Spanish tournament a few years ago because she wanted the appearance fee to pay for her Paris pad. She lost in the first round.
I'm a big fan of their court play. I would never down their ability. Also, their example has paved the way for women players not just of their race but for all races. However, that was before their antics. It seems to me that they, especially Serena, could easily write a book even more negative than Agassi's. Serena really doesn't seem to like anything about tennis except the money. Would you want your child to hear and see her at her last US Open match? As great as their ability, neither will win as much or be number one as long as the greatest players in tennis history. That is the real shame of their careers. Just think how good they could have been!!
The real point of my article was how negative to tennis the reaction of the media has been. Ignoring the current WTA stars to concentrate on the Williams is just plain wrong.

  12. Marija Post author

Wow so many comments! I expected this topic to be controversial, but for it to generate so many strong emotions has surprised me. I don't know where to start from with answers…

I know that the Williams sisters have the strongest fans, I've experienced it myself many times, even though I've always praised their impact on the world of tennis in general, they are the most recognized faces in women's tennis and without a doubt great champions.

Regarding John Bolan, he is one of the greatest contributors to Women's Tennis Blog. He often visits WTA tournaments and truly appreciates women's tennis. Also, he provided me with a couple of autographs that I gave out to the winners of a contest I organized (if you remember), and he wanted to send me more autographs to give to my readers, but I told him to send me later, because I already had many things to award.

As for those of you feeling hurt by John's opinion, I don't know why it struck you so much. The things that John said here I heard many times from various tennis fans. Such statements are circulating among people for years.

As for me, I admire the Williams sisters for everything they have done. The story about their growing up that I recently shared on my blog is just one of the proofs of how much I find their careers inspirational, especially the determination of their father. However, it doesn't mean that they are flawless and untouchable.

It seems that in women's tennis nowadays we have people who admire the Williams sisters (one group of fans) and the people who admire the new wave led by Wozniacki (the other group of fans). Why are fans who admire both so rare? I am one of them.

About faking injuries, the occasion Serena was suspicious to me was when she was surfing with Common in Hawaii after pulling out from a tournament with ankle injury.

Now I'll try to answer some of your comments:

Linda, wow the first comment was positive. :)

Tom, I didn't post this article "for some cheap hits", I thought that people would like to read another perspective and John is an educated person who I believe writes well.

Mg, I think your answer is the most reasonable! The Williams' power game is always a threat that some women can only occasionally overpower, thus some privileges they receive are well deserved because they attract viewers (like this year's Wimbledon seeding). On the other hand, they are experienced and the way they use breaks between games is one proof of it – they simply don't care for that rule and often it distracts their opponent and gives them the edge.

Who is the total loser?, Forty Deuce is one of my favorite tennis blogs, and my regular readers know that. As for my blog, I strongly believe that I write very objective articles, at least in 99% of the time.

TennisAce, what exactly do you mean by "a long time"? And which in particular are the indicators of this site's low points? I want to know in order to improve. Thanks. And, by the way, I believe that in your second comment you confused me with Mirjana, my names is Marija. Mirjana is another name.

Brenda, I agree that the sisters are the best-known WTA players and thus they can have a privileged status. Everything revolves around money and if they bring more money to a tournament the tournament will give them everything they want and the other players can only wish they were in their place. That's the way things function. As I said to TennisAce, I'm not Mirjana, it's another commentator, I'm Marija.

James and the many others criticizing me for posting the article, having you noticed that John even attacted me in the end of his article? Instead of praising me for being open enough to show people more perspectives, I am being attacted.

    Marine, thanks.

Mirjana, I agree, people should chill out!

Fyoto, haha you keep addressing me even though I never even replied to your comment. You are always hating me so much in the comments that I'm beginning to think that you're either jealous of me or you like me haha. I know you will deny it, but that's my impression.

  13. joeowen

I know thw Williams sisters don't show ther best tennis or even show up to tournaments most times, but these women have absolutely changed and revolutionized the sport! Let's face it, tennis was a sport for upper class citizens and thes women have shattered that mold. They have had one hell of a journey to the top of the game and for such an article based on bashing them is uncalled for! They have been through so much in there careers in and out of tennis! If there's another women on tour with such a story it would be largely documented if it were a wozniacki or sharapova, but it seems that the sisters don't deserve pity, and rightly so! They don't need the pity of anyone, player, spectator, or hater! They have proven countless times that they overcome adversity and prejudice. The sisters' story has inspired so many people in their goals even outside of tennis showing people that anything is possible even with all the obstacles that they will be faced with. Ask anyone that does not follow tennis at all to name women's tennis players and you'll probably only get the william sisters and sharapova, and if you ask them who's the current world number 1, they will say Serena because that's one of the only players that know. Popularity and money is what they bring to the game aswell! Lisicki did'nt get a higher seeding because she is not a 13 time grand slam champ, or even a ont time champ. She is not a 2 time defending champ, or has 20 grandslam titles in singles and doubles, or one of the greatest of all time!! If anything the Williams sisters have not gotten the respect they deserve. We should be thankful that these women stil play. Serena almost died and is here with her sister bringing the fire and passion onthe court that is intoxicating to watch! We live in an era where the best players play! Roger, rafa, venus , serena, all the best. The Williams sisters will inspire people beyond their years on the tour and be ingraved as some of the BEST and PASSIONATE players EVER!! So get over it and embrace them, because you know what they say. If you can't beat em, join em!:)

  14. ooolala

i think serena and venus are very good players, and although i am definitely not a fan, i respect that. but you have to admit sometimes they have a bad attitude. but they are human

  15. Tennis Fan

Wow, I love the beautiful game of tennis (men and women) and used to think that it was one of the few sports that had integrity and good human spirit.
How wrong could i have been. I came across this site by accident and read all the comments. It shows that jealousy, hatred and dear I say racism is strife amongst players and fans. I know certain female players (mostly european) do not like the sisters as it's evident when it comes to the handshake at the end of matches – but to say that Serena faked injuries especially her well documented brush with death earlier on this year, is really unkind.

Can't we just watch and enjoy what ALL players bring to the game of tennis be it little or small?

The future of tennis is bright because of the sisters who have brought it mainstream. IMHO

Two words for a bit of humour "Anna Kournikova"

  16. Marine

This is funny. I have been on this site for a long time and read criticism about various players. However, just when the WS are a target of any criticism, their fans attact otherw with either insults or all sort of ridiculous accusations. As for the racism card, lets look at your own comment, Tennis fan:
you had a go at European players (who are mostly WHITE)
you put down Kournikova (who is WHITE)
you claim that it was mainly the sister who brought tennis mainstream, thus taking the credit from other players (of mostly WHITE ethic background although there are minorities as well)
And you dare to pull a race card???? What a joke…

  17. Tennis Fan

Yes marine I expected the reply about "european players". Being of European descent myself, the joke is on you. You have just confirmed my statement by saying that most of the european players are white, hence racism. The humour over Anna kournikova (yes white she may be) was over all the attention she used to bring to tennis in her day over what she was wearing and not over her game. She did not win a single g/slam title. When she finally retired people only knew her for being the girlfriend of enrique inglesias. So why do the sisters get so much stick for having other interests outside of tennis?
And no I am not attacKing, just stating the obvious. Also I am a fan of ALL good players irrespective of their ethnic backgrounds and not just the Williams sisters.
Watching the Serena/kirilenko match right now. Watch the handshake at the end!!

  18. Marine

I am of the European origin myself and… not white. Who is laughing now? 😀
The most of European players are white, that´s a fact. Kournikova was actually a great player who won GS in mixed doubles, actually and many admired her tennis believe it or not although obviously you were not one of them.
A handshake? Sorry but that is really a NON-ISSUE and means nothing at all. Not everyone likes everyone in tennis, so with such rivalry it is absolutely normal.

  19. hosea robertson

i find it amazing how a whole culture can ignore the fact that some weeks ago serena williams was near death. i quess she was faking it. american being christian is a joke.

  20. Nigel

I have to say that I'm just disappointed this website allowed such an article. Although I can understand some of the grudges people may have with the Williams sisters, there's a way of saying things. The integrity of this site has fallen and I will not even glance at it again.

I guess helping kids in africa and giving clinics to inner city children is something to be ashamed of huh?

  21. Nigel

    And to add on…

Why would they even want to be kind to a sport that hasn't been kind to them?

There has been too many incidents in matches that have affected the Williams' while somehow other players have faced none.

    -The Indian Wells incident
-The shoulder bump in the 90's
    -The Roland Garros hand up
-The U.S. Open line calls incident against Capriati
-The foot fault to match point (Serena's reaction was uncalled for)
-The incorrect scored tiebreaker at Wimby during Venus' match

  22. JohnnyB

Nigel, are you saying the foot fault was not a correct call? It certainly was correct and has been proven. Are you and Tennis fan playing the race card? Please!! My friend, Arthur Ashe, and I served in the US Army together as officers. The Williams sisters never had to face anything like what he experienced especially in his hometown of Richmond, Virginia. Would he have refused to go back to Indian Wells over one disputed incident? He couldn't even play on white only courts and put up with real hatred on the tour. And he was a perfect gentleman who never would ever think about the words Serena used at the US Open.
I'm no hater of the Williams sisters. I don't like the fact that they only play very few tournaments. The point of my article is the way the media coverage of them hurts tennis and the players who have worked hard playing the tour week in and week out.
Hosea, it is well documented that Serena fakes injuries. I never said she faked her recent serious health problem. That problem was well documented by her physician – it was real.

  23. Marcel

JohnnyB you are saying that Serena faking her injuries have been documented by her physician. Can you provide everyone with an example

  24. kikila

I completely agree with John's post. I've never been on this site and the way it came about was I googled if the William sister's fake their injuries… It's not a secret that they hate to play matches other than grand slams. I heard today that Serena was complaining that she had to walk so far to one of the courts at Wimbledon but Sharapova gladly honored the walk to the same court. I personally can not stand the William sisters… However, Serena can play some serious tennis but lacks all edicate that goes with playing the sport. It's a shame!!

  25. P!nky

I agree with him all the way. Serena hasn't played in a year and she is seeded at SW19 because of her surname and what she had done in the past years. Venus had not played in 5 months, same thing. Sabine and a few other players got cheated out of seeds. The williams were also complaining about their court placings at SW19.

  26. Lexasmom

What other AMERICAN female tennis players are on top of their game right now? And who do you think is so great… Anna Kournikova? LOL!!! As for their grunting during games… Sharapova? Come on. And why shouldn't they be joyous in victory? It's not like their saying, "Na na na boo boo I beat you." It just sounds like the writer has a grudge of some kind. It seems to piss people off that these women have outside endeavors and are still playing awesome tennis. They force their competitors to be better.

  27. Tony

    Couple of points;

The Wimbledon rankings are done totally different to the other Slams, they take the players current points total, add any points from grass court tournaments gained in the last 12 months PLUS 75% of the points gained at Wimbledon the year before that (I think thats right). This is obviously going to bump the WS seedings right up. The seeding committe also use their discretion, its not the first time players have had a much higher seeding than they would get at another Slam, and it won't be the last time.

While I have no problem with articles like this being on the site (I'll keep coming back Marija 😉 ), to be honest they are a waste of time. What should provoke reasoned arguement/discussion only actually leads to ridiculous name calling and abuse. There seems to be no middle ground, the haters will hate and the fans think the sun shines out of their backsides and will not have a word said against them.

Its all too childish for words really (well, except for THESE words … obviously 😛 )

  28. Mia

I have always thought that the Williams sisters strength, muscles and physique were indicative of a person using steroids. When other players have injuries it takes time for them to gain their strength back(this includes the men as well.
I'm thinking there was a deal struck with The Williams sisters and the Fundraisers of the Grand Slams. For me, tennis has become a financial goal more than love for the sport. What would happen if like other Professional athletes a contract would be assigned for the year. Would it then be OK for Any player to decide they are too ill to participate? It's a joke! There are exceptions of course, and that's why I am still a fan: Djkovic, Federer, Ferrer,Sharapova, Azurenka,to name a few.

  29. Peggy

Where are you getting all that nonsense? Are you aware of the injuries Serena and Venus have had? They have had to miss tournaments because of illness. While you're loving on Djkovic, I suppose you have forgotten how he was always ill (from the heat)in tournaments. As an adult, you should be able to determine your level of health. What kind of deal are you talking about? Please explain – you're talking in riddles!!!! Of course tennis is a financial game – players love to play, but after all – it is a job….

  30. Mia

In most sports when players are injured they are sPeople like Billy Jean King Chris Evert, Lindsey Davenport, and others were dedicated and honesst players. Tennis today has become a place where politics has taken over talent and dedication.
    People need to wake up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. Mia

The comment I made was incomplete. My point is that in most other sports when a player is injured they are at the game sitting on the bench. Since Tennis is an individual sport,it seems that injured players should be assigned some sort of job to do at the tournmanents. To miss so many tournaments without any consequences seems to make a joke of the entire profession. In what other sport can a person decide when they will participate. The weear and tear on the body should be the same for all players.

  32. GordonH

I have read with interest all the different comments regarding these two so called greats. From the outset of their careers there has been destinct comparisons to drug users of both sexes in other sports. The women athletes of East Germany and China are good examples of what can be achieved with chemical use. Over the years they have had so many suspicious breaks prior to the big tournaments that to my mind are similar to the behaviour of known drug cheats in athletics etc.
There are obvious reasons why the WTA would want to make an issue of this, money and race being just two.

  33. EO

    @ Mia above,
Too bad you are blind sided by so much hatred for the Williams sisters that you don't know how ridiculous you sound. SMH. What a pity.

  34. bruno

I'm a sports fan period not just tennis,i admire many of the players who are playing some awesome tennis right now,as for the WS the are good but they only hav little times left with the sport because there are a lot of young players coming out who would be better players with the movement, speed, power hitters, runners and winners, for instance kvitova she's at the top of the list she will get a GS before CW that's a true fact.WS you will always be my favorite.

  35. jeanne

Sad day for Tennis, The Williams sisters aren't the only ones who gets angry on the tennis court, Azarenka who just won Australia was a pitbull,John Mac threw tantrum like a two year old and they glorify that..he was just disrespectful ..And Venus is laid-back. BUT THROUGH THIS ALL THEY WIN..THEY CAN PLAY SO STOP HATING!

  36. carli Garcia

john, now you can notice that you wrote very bad comments. You are really white shit. The williams sisters are still playing good. Caroline wozniacki proved to be a bad no 1. And your american new sweetheart Coco proved to be worthless. How much do they pay you to write comments. i think you have to go wiping toilets where black people had just let their waste on the ground. You dirty racist.

  37. Tulp

Dear carli Garcia, thank you for bringing my attention to this, uhm, very interesting post (I'm relatively new here, so I, sadly, missed the brawl, but thanks to your reviving it, I just got the chance of a retroactive experience). Now, I would never-ever feel any urge to make the following statement, were it not for this your comment (and, mind you well, in this I'm just a mirror, reflecting your own "light"): You are really black shit. [I] think you have to go wiping toilets where white people just let their waste on the ground. You dirty racist. How about this, carli? How does it feel? And how long are you (or, for that matter, the Sisters, or anyone else "black") going to exploit this "racism" issue?

  38. HatersRNThard

The WS have dealt with this from Day 1…they are both great players. Intimidation and power? That is a lame excuse for why the have demolished their competition for the past 15 years. As with any other sport, tennis should have a certain level of competition. No player should be intimidated by another in their sport. Sports in general takes a certain amount of toughness, if you can't keep up with the WS just retire like Hingis did! Or maybe like Henin, Pierce, etc. The disrespectful comments regarding the steroids are a joke and will not be commented upon. To John (writer of this very ignorant, biased, racist, and inexperienced article) I bet you don't say it to SERENA's face hahaha…I'm done wasting time on this repulsive website John get a real job, maybe you should be designing "togs" in London…food for thought!!!

  39. Are you still awake out there?

Anyone with half a Brain can not deny the glaringly
    obvious Fact,
that the Musculature from the Williams Sisters can
never have been achieved without using Steroids.
And why did she(Serena) hide from the Drug Testers after hearing who they were?
No innocent Person avoids Drug Tests.
Look at other Players eg Kvitova or Sharopowa,
they have totally normal Female Muscles.
Dream on Folks if you think these Sisters could be "innocent"

  40. Guilty People are always aggresive

    Sorry Folks
for me the biggest Proof of the Guilt of the Williams
    Sisters is there aggresiveness.
Such People that cannot keep themselves under control,
have no Place in Sport of any Kind.
It reminds me of Lance Armstrong and his vicious Threats against Witnesses.
And Steroids make you aggresive, thats a proven Fact.
And a Woman that looks like a Bodybuilder,
    must be using Steroids,
even Men do not get Muscles that easily.
Its like the Feakshow from East German and russian
women athletes during the cold war,
    they all used Steroids.

  41. Sport Trophys are Worthless anyway

Success in Sport and Sports Trophies have no real Value,
it just means you spend your whole Life playing Sport,
which is after all Selfish and egoistic.
People that cheat with Drugs should lose all Trophies and Titles,
they stole the Winners Title from the rightful Winner,
and its no big Deal if they get banned for Life
    and lose all Titles,
    its only a Game anyway.
Normal People must work hard just to survive.

Wimbledon is RIGGED, two of the best female players went out early… hmmmm… paving the way for another Williams 'winning' the final. / -:

I do not even watch tennis but to say you have to be on steroids to be muscular is very laughable. The stupidity of tennis fans is beyond believe. I watch football (soccer from the americans) and club trainers can make you look how they/you want. Sport is no longer the 1920's sport you know, there is a lot of science in sport so you should grow up. Didn't Djokovic have a different look ? If you eat a lot of protein and push heavy weights you will gain muscle. Hope that helps some of the dead heads here. And they say football fans are stupid, tennis fans take it to the next level. If you want to be racist be racist no one knows where you live but stupidity has no excuse. Like I said, I don't know much about tennis and Federer and Williams are very popular, a look at wikipedia tells me why.

    Federer : 23 (16 titles, 7 runners-up),
    Serena Williams : 18 (13 titles, 4 runner-ups).

    Stop hating !

Well in looking at the two sisters this is what I have to say. First, of the two, Venus appears to be the friendliest from what I have seen. For me, Serena is the most attractive of any female athlete I have ever seen, though she does come across as rather an unfriendly person (which I hope is not true), but who can forget that threatening behavior to that lines judge. If they only concentrated on tennis, I am sure both sisters would have been more dominant than they are, but would that be really good for the game if they dominated all the time, and I think that places like Wimbledon just realize how good they really both are. At the same time, there impact on tennis has been a positive one like Tiger Woods impact on golf. Just think how Tennis would be in the US with out the Williams sisters. Finally, at this time in History, Serena bight be the greatest female tennis player of all time.

I just came across this article. At best it is a poor piece of journalism with unsubstantiated rumors.

As for "haters" and fans, not everyone who dislikes Serena is a hater.

I do find it odd that people link their attitudes together. They are two completely different people.

Venus says little about anybody. However she was one of the few players who stood up for Shahar Peer when the Israeli was not allowed to play in Dubai. Venus was honored for this by the anti-defamation league.

As for the steroids accusations, they are silly and without merit. I covered college and professional sports for years, including two at Sports Illustrated. The tale tell signs of a woman on steroids is loss of fatty tissue, particularly in the breast and abs area —- think Marion Jones or female body builders.

Serena is one of the few women on tour who actually needs a bra. She has too much wiggle and jiggle to be on roids. Another sign is when a player comes out of nowhere to start dominating, like Floyd Landis in cycling.

Serena is built like her mother, gains weight easily, buffed. Venus is built like her father, tall and skinny. Nobody credible has ever accused the sisters of doping. Meanwhile the French press, former teammates and the US government have accused Lance Armstrong of doping and he gets the benefit of the doubt more than Serena.

There is no excuse for Serena's behavior in threatening a line judge. She was fined a record $82,000 ($70,000 more than Nalbandian who left an official bloodied). She issued a public and written apology. Those who wish to hold that against her forever, will. I see it as an ugly incident in an otherwise glorious career.

The header is "the sisters don't deserve the privileged status they have". Who decides what they deserve?. The statement is patronizing. Nobody gave them their status. They earned it.

All greats have fans and "haters". You can like them or leave them. However, unsubstantiated rumors of drug use have no place in journalism.

And coming from a man, the message seems so chauvinistic. Are all women with muscles on drugs? Shvedova, Kerber, Liscki, Stosur?

Wow. Guess I better put down the weights now, less I be accused on doing roids.
