Bethanie Mattek Sands lost in the first round of Wimbledon to Misaki Doi 6-4 5-7 7-5 but that sole American’s match would be enough for her Wimbledon 2011 appearance to be remembered, definitely in the years to come (she is in the doubles draw, partnered with Meghann Shaughnessy). What else would be the reason than Bethanie’s famous fashion!

As promised, the 31st-ranked Mattek Sands appeared on the court in a daring design resulting from her cooperation with Alex Noble, who is the name behind some of Lady Gaga’s outfits. It was a fringed jacket adorned with white tennis balls. Bethanie left the heavy jacket on the chair and played in a tight dress with sleeves of different length. Also, her trademark tube socks were accompanying the look.

Regarding body art, the short sleeve was showing off Bethanie’s tattoo (water lilies which symbolize enlightment and change, as Bethanie said in an interview for Women’s Tennis Blog) and on her face she had her signature black strips with a letter “B”. She’s recently signed an endorsement deal regarding the black strips, whose function is not only aesthetical, they replace sunglasses.

It’s not just on the court that Mattek Sands pushed the fashion limits. She warmed us up in the Wimbledon player party with her fluorescent yellow tennis ball gown.

  1. Bethanie has really pulled out all the stops this year!! An early blogger for the WTA, she was then named to the Hot Shots, one of the best marketing ploys the WTA has come up with in years. She has continued her bold fashion statements right into the all-white, conservative Wimbledon courts.

All this while earning her way into the seeds of a major, picking up new endorsements and tending to married life on the tour!

  2. Hah, she might be thinking she’s Lady Gaga of tennis or something 🙂 The one to watch on the court (not outside it) this year is Pironkova, she is doing great on the tournament so far
