Last year the Copenhagen e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open was organized for the first time and Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki delighted her home fans by going all the way to the title. This week, at the second edition of the tournament, the now top-ranked Wozniacki repeated the feat by beating Lucie Safarova 6-1 6-4 in the final of this hard-court event placed in-between the clay and grass tennis seasons.

The Williams sisters are stealing the attention with their comebacks, while Wozniacki is playing and winning. The Dane didn’t drop a set throughout the tournament and after victories over Irina Falconi, Angelique Kerber, Alberta Brianti and Mona Barthel, she avenged her loss to Safarova from their only previous meeting in Stuttgart 2010, collected her fifth WTA title of the season (Dubai, Indian Wells, Charleston, Brussels, and now Copenhagen) and earned $37,000 and 280 points.

Meanwhile, the AEGON Classic tournament in Birmingham couldn’t come to a close according to the schedule as the Daniela Hantuchova vs. Sabine Lisicki final has been postponed due to rain. (photo: Ralf Reinecke)

  1. Patricia ..are you joking no? wozniacki won a tournament specially create for her (in her country and with ALL of her sponsors)..without top players (the players who are thinking in WINNING wimbledon are playing tournaments on grass)..she won against Irina Falconi (109), Angelique Kerber (76), Alberta Brianti (57) , Mona Barthel (142), and lucie sarafova (38) that are players out of top20!!!!!!! Very important tittle for wimbledon preparation no?
she was n1 and top seed at the tournament and the seed n2 was a player out of top 20! please..don’t say stupid
things! It makes me feel ungry!

PD: the pic is not from this year

  2. God Praticia, in regard to your first comment, what are you smoking and where can I get some of it? If you didn’t realise Copenhagen is one of the smallest tournaments on tour! And most of the good players are playing in Birmingham. Caro was the only top 20 player in the draw! This proves nothing that she won one of the smallest WTA tournaments that 1) should not be placed where it is and 2) is only created she Caro can win another pathetic title.

  3. I have to agree that the players she defeated in Copenhagen are not even close to big names, except Lucie Safarova. I guess this title will do nothing for Caroline’s reputation, but it is good that she is faithful to her home tournament. By the way, Copenhagen and Birmingham have the same strength, only that more famous players played Birmingham this time.

Brenda, yes, that photo is from last year.

  4. The lower rank of tournament does not mean anything. In the end of the day it all comes down to the performances of the players. As far as her schedule is concerned she plays the average number of tournaments and every player is trying to get some matches under their belt before Grand Slams.
I think Caro needs some confidence boost before Wimbledon, so did Ana who played Birmingham.
Last think, Brenda, everyone has the right to say their opinion whether you agree with it or not. So, calm down.

  5. Dear Marija, you seem to have the right connection because you are able to show us the dresses the girls will wear for the US Open long before we can buy them =) Could you perhaps show me a picture from the adilibria Jacket and the pants that will be worn by Ana at wimbledon as well as those from the US open? It’s because my aunt is going to New-York in a few weeks and I’d like her to buy them for me (if they look nice =))
    Thanks a lot =)

  6. Cath, I don’t know what her Wimbledon and US Open jacket will look like, I do know about the Wimbledon and US Open dress. https://womenstennisblog.com/2011/06/06/future-adidas-and-nike-dresses/

However, Wimbledon starts in just a week, so by the time your aunt goes to New York, you will have the opportunity to see Ana’s Wimbledon jacket.

This is Ana’s latest jacket: http://www.prodirecttennis.com/prodinfo.asp?PID=PDT-303-001-311&DEPT=303&SS=1&GROUP=ADIDASW

By the way, Tennis Warehouse and Pro-Direct Tennis are good sources to see what’s around. You can also check out Ana’s official website.

  7. To the commenters of my first comment: You have to see the enormous pressure Caro standed under. She HAD to win for her sponsors, for her fans and for her whole country. I don’t know how you want to play your best tennis under such a pressure. Caro had to represent her country and not only herself.
So I don’t think you can say the tournament was easy, so Caro HAD to win. She fought like in every tournament, too.
    Thanks for your attention.

  8. Nice win for Caro (an another title), she’s now 10-0 in match wins there over the two years. Looks like Woz is up to 17 titles won – that’s great for such a young age. Folks, a win is a win.

  9. Brenda, there are never stupid opinions. Perhaps some which needs getting used to.
Should we take this argument longer and longer or do you agree when I’m asking for peace? 😉
