Both last year’s finalists were in action today. Defending champion Francesca Schiavone had an easy progress into the fourth round, as her opponent Peng Shuai retired with breathing problems at 6-3 1-2 (Schiavone won the first set). However, last year’s runner-up Samantha Stosur bowed out to unseeded Gisela Dulko – this match-up suggested a possible upset, especially because their both previous encounters were close, and the 51st-ranked Dulko recorded a 6-4 1-6 6-3 victory this time.

Argentina’s Dulko established a 5-2 lead in the first set, and even though she missed set points in the next two games, she capitalized on the third one. The eight-seeded Stosur didn’t allow Dulko any break opportunities in the second set and won it 6-1, but in the decider it was Dulko who took charge again, with a break to take a 4-2 lead. Then she held twice to progress into the fourth round of Roland Garros for the second time.

Schiavone’s opponent in the fourth round will be Jelena Jankovic who beat Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-2 6-2. Kuznetsova is also through, with a 6-0 6-4 win over Rebecca Marino. (photos courtesy of Tony)

  1. Wozniaki out… Hantuchkova ousted wozniaki. Her last match against wozniak was an indication she might be going out in the 3rd round. THe dark horse, Julia goerges, also ousted by French Bartoli. THe draw has opened up alot. Though a few favourites, (Masha, Kvitiva and Azarenka) are still there.
Kuzneksova is also out there, one of the only 2 former roland garros champions left in the draw. But only one of them will make it to the finals (since they are to meet in semis, should they make it that far). Lets see what comes out.
