German Julia Goerges beats No.1 Caroline Wozniacki in Stuttgart final

Julia Goerges thrilled the home crowd by upsetting world No.1 Caroline Wozniacki 7-6(3) 6-3, thus becoming a surprise titlist at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart. The 32nd-ranked German also defeated Michaella Krajicek, Victoria Azarenka (it was a retirement, though), Sabine Lisicki and fifth seed Samantha Stosur before coming to face the top-ranked player.

The big-serving Goerges never allowed Wozniacki to break her, and stunned the Dane by forcing her to play backhand and make errors. The first set went with serve until the tiebreak, which Goerges opened up with a 5-2 lead. In the second set, Goerges established a 3-0 lead and was always in advantage until clinching the Premier-level tournament.

Goerges is now 2-1 in career WTA finals. Her other tournament win came last year at Bad Gastein, while she lost the 2010 Luxembourg final to Roberta Vinci. (photo: Ralf Reinecke)

YES!!! Knew my girl Julia could do it! Listen, at Copenhagen last year, Julia and Caro had such an intense match that When one call went against her, Caro slammed down her racket, stalked over and cursed the veteran umpire (yup, daddy was over in a flash to calm daughter). Match went 3 sets and was decided by tie-break in the Princess of Denmark's favor.

Been watching Julia for some time as she has the dangerous offensive weapons: big serve, powerful forehand and agressive returns that I favor in players. I knew this attacker wouldn't fall for Caro's "I am invincible" Jeddi mindtrick bs. This time it was Julia who had the homecourt advantage AND more importantly, the fiery German had revenge on her mind.

Enjoy that Porsche Baby! Thanks for giving us power-game-lovers more hope that the sport won't be taken over by the defensive baseliners lead by Caro "I can run forever" Woz. C'mon youngster attackers: Julia, Petra, Vika, Ana, Petko and Rezai etc — Serena, THE BEST EVER at this style has already shown the path. Whoooohooooweee!!! (Okay I'm done, sorry for the over-the-top, couldn't help it).

This is a real surprise, I thought Caro had it in the bag! But it's not over until its over. Goerges will be coming to Roland Garros in high spirits :-)

when you win this tourney, don't Porsche give the winner a 911(jumped up Beetle).

Too funny Helen! Your "baby" can enjoy her new toy. According to some tweets, Andrea and Caro seem pretty jealous about it and would have loved to go back in convertible. Congrats to Görges! Some of her shots were incredible and she didn't panic at the end.

I'm glad for Julia, she plays really attractive, and time will soy is she really capable of constant good results. Btw, I have to say- Caroline was just totally overpowered.

great match for julia! but i find excelent how caroline improves all her 2010 performances in the first part of the year (only in miami she losed a round before). Last year has been defeted in first round and this year she made finals..She has many points to defense, but on the other part of the year..now she's accumulating a lot of points and she doesn't have to defense them.

Thank you Brenda. Julia did well, but becoming number one and even making more points to the rest is an achievement as well. And not many players get there.

Helen, I LOVE your comment and your passion! :) Goerges' win is proving for the 1000th time that everyone is favorite for everything now in women's tennis. It is just a matter of whose weakness will surface or whose strength will surface.

P!nky, she got the Porsche! ;)

Nice to see a revival in German tennis. I cannot see Caroline winning a Grand Slam title.

I think this is how JJ got her 2008 911 turbo convertible in red.

i see caroline winning a gs tittle but not in roland garros..she has never won a red clay tittle so for me she hasn't got possibilities this year..I think sam could win it
